NRL fans slam Channel Nine for ‘sexist’ all-male commentary

  • Before State of Origin 2018 kicked off fans were slamming commentary panel
  • Viewers questioned why no women were included on the male-dominant team
  • Channel Nine was slammed despite having a lot of women to include on panel

Footy fans have slammed the coverage of the highly anticipated first State of Origin game for failing to include any women on the panel.

Channel Nine was attacked on social media for using a male dominant commentary team despite having a number of women skilled in rugby league.

The State of Origin 2018 kicked off Wednesday evening but before it even began, an eagle eyed viewer was quick to notice the lack of female involvement.

‘Channel 9 couldn’t have put one of the NRL’s newly signed female players on the panel? Or on the sideline,’ one woman tweeted.

While the NRL is usually focused on men, many women could have easily taken up a spot on the panel.

The Sunday NRL Footy Show presenter Allana Ferguson often appears on sport panels after retiring from women’s rugby league.

The former Jillaroo is also often seen co-hosting alongside fellow The NRL Footy Show host Erin Molan – who gave birth to her first child on the same day as the first Origin clash between New South Wales and Queensland.

Some eager fans were however less concerned about women’s involvement and more frustrated by the ‘questionable’ commentary in general.

‘It’s time again to watch Origin with the sound off. Channel 9 and it’s shocking pre, post and during match commentary is trash. Over dramatised dribble,’ another wrote.

‘Man I forgot how much I hate Channel 9 commentary,’ one said.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Channel Nine for comment.

Other viewers described the commentary as 'shocking trash' which was 'over dramatised'
