It has been a humiliating 24 hours for Peter V’landys and NRL fans have taken to Twitter to add to the pile on after the footy supremo’s embarrassing Grand Final backflip.

On Thursday, V’landys confirmed that this year’s Grand Final will remain in Sydney after threatening to move the showpiece event to Brisbane in response to the NSW Government’s refusal to go through with their $800million pledge on stadium upgrades in the state.

During a press conference, the 60-year-old managed a swipe at NSW premier Dominic Perrottet after being forced to back down.

‘Dom is a very good premier and a very good human being but don’t have a bet with him because if you do he won’t pay you,’ V’landys said.

The Australian Rugby League Commission chairman caused the entire footy world to have a mini heart attack when he said the grand final would be moving to Melbourne.

‘I’ll be very short and sweet, the commission has been in negotiations now for over a week,’ V’landys said at the press conference, grinning like a Cheshire cat.

‘We wanted to give it to a city that needs a major football event, and that is why we have gone with Melbourne.

‘Just kidding… greetings Gil (McLachlan) if you are watching,’ V’landys said.

It was perhaps an effort on his part to save face after he couldn’t get what he wanted, despite threatening the state government with his push for a Queensland grand final.

And NRL fans have taken to Twitter to blast the footy boss, with one claiming he gives the impression of a ‘cheap used car salesman’.

‘If Peter V’landys was the CEO of the A League I’d be so embarrassed,’ they posted. ‘This guy has all the traits of a cheap used car salesman.’

‘I think Peter V’landys would do well in the upper echelons of FIFA,’ another wrote.

‘Peter V’landys having a dummy spit because he didn’t get an $800million handshake deal for a white elephant stadium upgrade in writing is so so funny,’ a third wrote.

Meanwhile, one fan was far from impressed with V’landys’ attempt at humour.

‘BREAKING: Peter V’landys has been advised NOT to pursue a career in comedy.’

Penrith also pointed fun at the footy supremo’s gag, posting an image of Stadium Australia with the caption: Park with the caption: ‘We’ve arrived in Melbourne… just kidding.’
