The Penrith Panthers have become embroiled in more off-field drama after Tyrone Phillips was charged with mid-range drink driving early Sunday.

The club has confirmed it’s aware of an alleged incident involving the Fijian international, 25, after he was stopped by police in Cranebrook in western Sydney on Sunday morning.

Police will allege Phillips returned a breath alcohol content reading of 0.103, more than twice the legal limit.

His licence suspended and Phillips will appear in Penrith Local Court on April 16.

The matter has been referred to the NRL integrity unit.

‘Panthers Group chief executive Brian Fletcher has confirmed Panthers was today made aware that player Tyrone Phillips was last night charged with a mid-range drink driving offence,’ a club statement released on Sunday night read.

‘The matter has been reported to the NRL integrity unit.

‘The NRL integrity unit has advised the club to allow the matter to go through the court process.

‘Panthers will be making no further comment at this time.’

The alleged incident occurred after Phillips played in Penrith’s 26-24 Canterbury Cup win over St George at Panthers Stadium on Saturday.

It’s understood he will continue to play to for the club, with any punishment to be determined after the conclusion of his court case.

Phillips has played 15 NRL first grade games since 2015, including six games for the Canterbury Bulldogs in 2015-16.

He joined the Panthers in 2018, where he has played another nine NRL games.

He has also represented Fiji on four occasions. 

It’s the latest in a series of off-field incidents involving Penrith players in early 2019.
