NSW, Victoria, Tasmania weather: destructive wind gusts develop ahead of chilly cold front

Severe weather warning with ‘destructive’ winds up to 125km/h to batter parts of Australia – before a chilly cold front moves in

  • Winds of up to 125km to hit parts of Tasmania
  • NSW snowfields forecast to receive winds up to 100km
  • Victoria could see wind gusts in excess of 90km
  • Damaging wind gusts developing ahead of cold front

A severe weather warning has been issued for multiple states across Australia’s southeast with ‘destructive wind gusts’ developing ahead of a chilly cold front.

Damaging winds of up to 125km are expected to lash parts of Tasmania on Sunday morning as the blustery cold front sweeps across the country’s southeast, including the Western Tiers, Deloraine, and Shefield areas.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued similar warnings for parts of eastern Victoria which could see wind gusts in excess of 90km on Sunday morning – particularly in coastal or higher-up areas – before receding in the afternoon.

Victoria, Tasmania and New South Wales will be lashed with ‘destructive wind gusts’ of up to 125km

Winds will develop further in the state’s far east near the coastal areas including a Mallacoota.

A gale warning is also in place for the Central Gippsland Coast, East Gippsland Coast and Central Coast.

Winds generally increase in speed over higher terrain and exposed coasts, which puts these locations at risk of damaging winds more often.

The NSW snowfields are forecast to receive a lashing of up to 100km, with the damaging winds also whipping across the state’s south coast, central and southern tableland, and Illawarra districts on Sunday morning.

Areas which could be affected including Wollongong and Nowra on the coast, as well as Natoomba, Bombala, and Nimmitabal.

The strong gusts are due to a high-pressure system passing over southern Western Australia, as a cold front also passes over the east of Tasmania.

Surfers, rock fishers, and all boat users have also been warned that gale force winds could lead ‘very heavy surf’ and large waves across the NSW coastline, including the Illawarra, Sydney, and Hunter coasts regions – namely Seal Rocks and Nelson Bay.

Sydney will be shielded from much of the wild weather with a forecast of partly cloudy conditions and a top of 19C.

The nation’s capital will likewise dip to a maximum temperature of 14C, with wind gusts between 20-30km.

While the state’s northeast is largely expected to escape the worst of the wild weather, BOM forecasters have issued a strong wind warning for marine areas of the South East Gulf of Carpentaria, Peninsula Coast, Cooktown Coast, and Moreton Bay.

Brisbane ifs forecast to be sunny with winds up to 40km in the morning cooling down before a top of 22C.

Winds will ease across Tasmania, Victoria, and NSW in the afternoon as the cold front.
