NTAs 2020: Ruth Langsford, Eamonn Holmes and Phillip Schofield cross paths at ceremony

Ruth Langsford’s frosty relationship with Phillip Schofield became the talk of Twitter on Tuesday night, as the stars shared the stage at the National Television Awards.

As their show scooped top prize in the Live Magazine Show category, Ruth, who was seated behind Phillip and Holly Willoughby with her husband and co-presenter Eamonn Holmes, made her way to the stage at London’s O2 Arena.

And viewers couldn’t help but point out the ‘frosty’ and ‘awkward’ interaction between the TV personalities, following reports that Ruth filed a formal complaint with ITV bosses in December about Phil.

Frosty: Ruth Langsford’s frosty relationship with Phillip Schofield became the talk of Twitter on Tuesday night, as the stars shared the stage at the National Television Awards

Acknowledging that the alleged feud is said to have been caused by Phil cutting off Ruth during a live segment handover, one viewer wrote on Twitter: ‘Absolutely SCREAMING at Phillip thanking Eamonn and Ruth and FINALLY alerting them speak after ten years. HR department at ITV found rotting.’

Wrote another viewer: ‘The most awkward chemistry on TV goes to This Morning. Got to love Ruth for clearly showing what she felt! No amount of Holly gushing about Phil could help the situation!’

And after Phillip gestured for Ruth to make a speech after his, as he thanked her and Eamonn for doing a ‘great job’ hosting the show every Friday, the interaction only appeared to be all the more awkward to observant viewers.

Wrote one fan: ‘Ruth Langsford’s “Thank you” through gritted teeth to Phillip Schofield after he suggests that she should also speak was a mood.’

And even as the stars made their way backstage with their trophy, it appeared that Holly and Phillip and Ruth and Eamonn remained in their presenting pairs, rather than interact with each other as a group.

Eamonn and Ruth arrived on the red carpet at London’s O2 Arena, looking full of beans – Ruth stealing focus in a hot pink dress.

Accomanied by her tuxedo-clad husband, Ruth, 59, stunned in the floor-length gown, which accentuated her lithe frame with cut-outs at the shoulders.

She styled her blonde locks sleekly around her features, showing off a pair of glistening drop earrings and adding a pop of drama to proceedings with a sweep of black mascara at her lashes and a burst of pink to her pout.

She and Eamonn larked around on the red carper, being photobombed at one point by Kem Cetinay.

The couple shared a snap to Instagram in their finery before heading out to the ceremony, as Phillip did the same.

Eamonn and Ruth posed looking glam surrounded by their stylists. Phillip did the same on his account, showing off his smart look in a tuxedo, seemingly getting ready on his own.

Ruth and Phillip shared their first onscreen conversation last week following reports that Ruth filed a formal complaint with ITV bosses in December about Phil.

Ruth appeared via video link from the Loose Women studio to update viewers on what was coming up on her show, which airs after Phil’s slot on This Morning.

While the new ITV daytime schedule usually sees the Loose Women cast go to the This Morning studio in person to chat with Phil and his co-presenter Holly Willoughby, Ruth remained in the separate studio for the segment.

Speaking to the camera, Ruth said: ‘Hello, it’s just me, it’s just me on my own,’ prompting an ‘Oh no’ from Phil.

Ruth added: ‘It’s nice to talk to you two,’ before Phil interrupted, telling her: ‘You could have come in here…’

‘I could have, couldn’t I. I’ll do that next time…’ admitted Ruth, as Phil joked: ‘You know where it is!’

‘It’s just across there isn’t it,’ replied Ruth. ‘I’ll find my way don’t worry about it.’

The ITV favourite then continued to tell viewers about Tuesday’s Loose Women before handing back to Phil and Holly.

Last month Phillip was accused of creating a ‘toxic atmosphere’ for his This Morning co-stars, with allegations of ongoing spats with Holly and stand-in hosts Ruth and her husband Eamonn Holmes.

It is claimed eight different ITV presenters have broken their silence regarding Phillip’s attitude, while Ruth is thought to have made a formal complaint to ITV’s new head of daytime TV Emma Gormley.

It followed an incident in April which saw Phillip interrupt Ruth while she was presenting a preview of Loose Women during This Morning.

A report stated the situation behind the scenes at This Morning had become ‘toxic’ in recent months, with employees too scared to speak out publicly for fear of backlash.

An ITV source told The Sun: ‘For so long people have been silenced because they are scared for their job. If they speak out publicly about the atmosphere they fear there could be repercussions.’

The Mail On Sunday revealed relations between Phillip, Ruth, 59, and Eamonn, 60, are said to be so bad that the couple snubbed the show’s Christmas party to avoid him.

The Friday presenters were surprisingly absent from the no-expense-spared dinner at a West London restaurant where 23 of their colleagues enjoyed a four-course meal and champagne.

Hitting back at the reports, a spokesperson for ITV said: ‘It’s deeply disappointing and unfair for Phillip to be the target of this sort of malicious gossip.

‘Phillip is a much respected broadcaster and colleague and this is absolutely not a description of This Morning that we recognise.

‘Holly and Phil are great friends both on and off screen and are popular among viewers and colleagues alike.’

Phil also slammed the rumours as he discussed the ‘lovely team’ during the Dancing On Ice launch.

The TV star said: ‘Can you imagine a feud between us ever happening? It’s not as if we have to defend anything.

‘It’s a shame… we are so open on the show, we are so open online and we go on holiday together. Holly is the sister I never had, we think at the same speed. It’s so organic… it’s a shame.

Staying put: Ruth said: 'It's nice to talk to you two,' before Phil interrupted, telling her: 'You could have come in here...'

‘Everyone who knows us, I mean, everyone at This Morning was like, “What the hell?” The atmosphere in our studio is so wonderful, there’s such a lovely team. Everyone is lovely.’

This isn’t the first time Phillip’s alleged feuds have hit the headlines, but Amanda Holden is the only star to have spoken publicly about it.

Britain’s Got Talent judge Amanda said she believes the TV favourite sabotaged her chances of filling in on This Morning in 2018 while Holly Willoughby hosted I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here.

Reports have long been rife about troubles between the TV hosts, with the latest detail of the story claiming Amanda headed to the top by lobbying ITV executives over the animosity after Phil allegedly pushed for Rochelle Humes to take the job.

Amanda first worked with Phillip when she stepped into Holly’s shoes when the This Morning star took a year off the show to have her third baby four years ago in October 2014.

A former daytime TV executive told the publication: ‘Phillip actively campaigned for Rochelle, 30, to get the job despite Amanda being more experienced – and having been told privately she’d got the gig.’

ITV’s statement in full:

An ITV spokesperson said: ‘It’s deeply disappointing and unfair for Phillip to be the target of this sort of malicious gossip.

‘Phillip is a much respected broadcaster and colleague and this is absolutely not a description of This Morning that we recognise.

‘Holly and Phil are great friends both on and off screen and are popular among viewers and colleagues alike.’

Martin Frizell, Editor of This Morning said: ‘I spend hundreds of days a year in their company and what you see is what you get, a genuine friendship from a couple who are both spontaneously funny and professional.

‘We have the smartest viewers watching telly and believe me they would be the first to notice any issues – they haven’t because there are none.’

An ITV spokesperson said: ‘Presenter line ups on This Morning change regularly and final decisions on these line ups are made by producers and not the presenters.

‘Phillip Schofield is a much loved broadcaster and part of the ITV family. He is a consummate professional and held in high regard at ITV.

‘Amanda is also held in high regard as a judge on one of our biggest shows.’

The Sun claimed Amanda confronted Phillip during an advert break when the judge was interviewed by Phil and Holly on This Morning in October, days after Rochelle was confirmed to be stepping in.

A source told The Sun: ‘She made it clear that she felt very let down. He was lost for words but didn’t have much time to respond to Amanda’s claims because the show was going back on air.

‘Neither of them realised that Amanda could be overheard by most of the team because she was still wearing her mic pack.’

Meanwhile, the National Television Awards were hosted by David Walliams for the first time.

In February, Dermot O’Leary announced that he would be stepping down after 10 years presenting the show, having himself taken over from Sir Trevor McDonald.
