NYPD officers shoot dead a gunman just minutes after he killed another man during argument near a Manhattan park

  • Two men emerged from a hookah lounge early Thursday and got into a dispute, during which one pulled a gun and fatally shot the other
  • Two officers patrolling the nearby Tompkins Square Park responded to the scene and ordered the gunman to get down on the ground
  • Police say the man refused to comply and walked away, prompting the officers to shoot him three times, killing him 
  • Suspect was out on parole after serving eight years in prison in connection to a previous shooting 

Police officers responding to a deadly shooting near Manhattan’s Tompkins Square Park overnight shot and killed the alleged gunman who they say refused to surrender. 

The incident began unfolding at around 3.30am when the authorities say two men emerged from a hookah lounge at Avenue A and East 7th Street in the East Village neighborhood, and got into an argument. 

During the verbal dispute, one of the men pulled out a gun and shot the other, killing him.

Two police officers who were out on patrol in the park heard the shot and responded to the scene.

NYPD Chief of Department Terence Monahan said during a press conference early Thursday morning that the officers gave numerous commands to the gunman to get down on the ground, but he refused and tried to walk away.

The officers then opened fire, striking the suspect three times.

The gunman and his victim were taken to Bellevue Hospital, where both men were pronounced dead from their injuries.

Police recovered two .22-caliber handguns at the scene, including a bloodstained firearm that was found beneath the man who was shot by the cops.

A second .22-caliber gun was found near the body of the victim shot by the gunman

The other gun was found near the body of the victim.  

According to the authorities, the suspect, who has not been named, was out on parole after serving eight years in prison in connection to a previous shooting at the time of his death, reported the New York Post.

The officers who fired the fatal shots were unharmed but were taken to a hospital for an evaluation. 

Their body cameras were activated during the incident and the videos are now being reviewed.
