NYPD rescues sailor stranded at sea for days without food

The NYPD rescued a sailor who found himself stranded at sea for days with no food and no fuel.

A fisherman noticed 39-year-old Paul Sayre’s boat almost six miles off Rockaway Point, Queens, around 9.45am on Sunday and called the police.

When NYPD Special Operation officers arrived, they found a boat with a ripped main sail and a boatman aboard.

Officers say he was dehydrated but otherwise healthy after being stuck out at sea for four days.

Sayre had been traveling from Fire Island to Manhattan when he ran out of gas, reported the New York Daily News.

He had no food and just a few bottles of water. Additionally, his cellphone battery had died and he didn’t have a radio.

Sources reportedly told the Daily News that Sayre told officers he was living full-time aboard the vessel, but he had just bought it and hadn’t given it a proper name.

‘Apparently he had no business being out there,’ said a police source.

His rescuers towed the boat to the Marine Basin Marina in Gravesend, Brooklyn, and medics took Sayre to Coney Island Hospital in stable condition.

The event comes just ten days after the NYPD rescued a sailor 16 miles out at sea. The crewman fell 35 feet while on board a commercial oil tanker vessel and then went into cardiac arrest (Pictured, NYPD rescuers save the injured sailor)

The event comes just ten days after the NYPD rescued a sailor 16 miles out at sea.

The crewman fell 35 feet while on board a commercial oil tanker vessel and then went into cardiac arrest.

On September 21, the Aviation Unit was dispatched and reached the ship around 1.30pm.

Once in the chopper, the officers flew the injured seaman to Staten Island University Hospital for treatment.

Officers said, if done by boat, the rescue would have likely taken about two hours. But with the helicopter, the rescue took less than 30 minutes.
