NZ man forgets sold car while drunk and reports it stolen

  • A man has reported his car stolen after forgetting he sold it while intoxicated
  • The New Zealand resident went to Rotorua Police Station thinking it was missing
  • But he sold the vehicle while inebriated in a bid to get money to keep drinking

A New Zealand man has forgotten he sold his car while intoxicated and reported it stolen to police.

The man went to Rotorua Police Station, on the north island, over the weekend after discovering the car was gone, according to the New Zealand Herald.

However, the man had reportedly sold the vehicle for $800 while he was inebriated, in a bid to help him continue drinking.

The man who purchased the car checked the registration the following day, using vehicle history site Car Jam.

The seller’s report to police about the alleged theft meant the car was flagged on the website and led the buyer to contact police.

‘The man came into the station with the car to let us know what had happened,’ Senior Sergeant Dennis Murphy said.

‘We were able to get in touch with the original owner and told them to sort it out between them.’

In light of the incident, police warned that not only was it dangerous to drink and drive, but that ‘the lesson here is don’t drink and sell cars’.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted New Zealand Police for comment.
