Odell Beckham Jr. did NOT deserve to be booted from his flight in Miami, his attorney claims

Odell Beckham Jr did not deserve to be kicked off a Los Angeles-bound flight from Miami on Sunday morning, but was instead the victim of an ‘overzealous flight attendance’ who ‘wanted to prove’ his authority, according to the NFL free agent’s attorney.

Beckham was removed from the flight at the Miami airport after allegedly refusing to put his seatbelt as the plane was about to depart, according to police.

However, Beckham’s attorney Daniel Davilier, has released a statement disputing police claims that his client was at fault for the hour-and-half delay that resulted from the confrontation.

‘Earlier today, Odell Beckham Jr boarded a morning flight in Miami without any problems,’ the statement read. ‘The flight was delayed after boarding and prior to take off. Mr. Beckham fell asleep with his blanket over his head, which is his normal practice for long flights. He was awaken[ed] and told that the plane was back at the gate and that he needed to get off the plane because he did not put his seatbelt on when asked. He responded that he was asleep, and that he would put his seatbelt on at that time. He was informed that it was too late, and that either he would have to get off the plane or everyone would have to deplane.

‘The overzealous flight attendant insisted on removing everyone from the plane instead of simply allowing Mr. Beckham to fasten his seatbelt and proceed with the flight. At no time was Mr. Beckham disruptive or combative. He was willing to comply with the seatbelt requirement, but the flight attendant wanted to prove that he had the authority to have Mr. Beckham removed from the flight. The airline proceeded to send Mr. Beckham’s luggage to Los Angeles without him.’

Davilier went on to say the ‘incident was unnecessary.’

‘Sleeping on a plane should not be a cause for removal from a flight,’ he said. ‘If they could wake him up when the flight returned to the gate, then they could have done the same thing to ask him to put on his seatbelt.’

The flight was scheduled to take off at 9:30am from Miami but was delayed for nearly an hour and 30 minutes before departing on the busiest weekend of the year, following Thanksgiving. Passengers were forced off the plane after Beckham refused after multiple requests, according to a police statement.

Beckham, meanwhile, tweeted on Sunday: ‘Never in my life have I experienced what just happened to me… I’ve seen it alll..’

He then tweeted ‘Never. In. My. Life’ and ‘I COULD NEVER MAKE THIS UP’.

Footage also surfaced of Beckham appearing to be escorted by police to the ticketing area of the airport in Miami.

The person who filmed Beckham being led through the airport replied to another tweet of Beckham’s, which read ‘comedy hour.’

‘Forcing us off the plane because you were unresponsive and unruly is not comedy to the hundreds of folks trying to get home dude,’ read the passenger’s tweet. ‘Not cool man.’

Another person claiming to be on the flight wrote on Twitter: ‘I was on this flight he wasn’t unresponsive he was SLEEP.

‘They tried to wake him up to put on his seat belt a couple times then they got aggressively rude with him and he responded with the same energy GTFOH.’

A police statement said: ‘At approximately 9:30am, officers from the Miami-Dade Police Department, were dispatched to a medical emergency at an American Airlines flight.

‘The flight crew was concerned for a passenger (Mr. Odell Beckham), as they tried to wake him to fasten his seat belt, he appeared to be coming in and out of consciousness, prior to their departure.

‘Fearing that Mr. Beckham was seriously ill, and that his condition would worsen through the expected 5 hour flight, the attendants called for police and fire rescue.

‘Upon the officers arrival, the flight crew asked Mr. Beckham several times to exit the aircraft, which he refused. The aircraft was deplaned, at which time Mr. Beckham was asked by the officers to exit the plane, and did so without incident.

‘Mr. Beckham was escorted to the non-secure area of the terminal by the officers where he made other arrangements.’

An American Airlines statement added: ‘American Airlines flight 1228, with service from Miami (MIA) to Los Angeles (LAX), returned to the gate before takeoff due to a customer failing to follow crew member instructions and refusing to fasten their seatbelt.

‘The customer was removed and the flight re-departed at 10:54 a.m. local time.’

NFL star Beckham, 30, is a free agent and is in the final stages of recovering from an ACL injury sustained when he was playing for the Los Angeles Rams in the Super Bowl in February. The Rams beat the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20 at the SoFi stadium.

Beckham Jr also starred at the New York Giants and has been linked with a sensational return to the team later this year

He has been linked with signing for a number of teams and earlier this week Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones spoke about the prospect of Beckham joining.

‘Odell could help us. I believe that right now,’ Jones told reporters. ‘Now, we got to make it fit. That’s the challenge.

‘I think just the general how we make this fit. All of that, availability is huge, but the financial part is really huge, too.’

Beckham, who has also played for the Giants and the Browns, had until recently expected to sign with a team by the end of November. The Giants have also been strongly linked with signing Beckham once again.

He is the son of two former LSU stars with his father playing as a running back on the football team between 1989-1992, while his mother won three national relay championships with the Baton Rouge school.

The former Giants receiver started his career in historic fashion and looked destined for a bust in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Though injury, poor quarterback play and controversy have contributed to an inconsistent career since the 2017 season. Beckham entered the league in 2014 and set numerous NFL and Giants franchise records.

There have been moments of madness throughout however, not least his infamous on-field war with then-Carolina defensive back Josh Norman in December 2015.

The following season, Beckham took out a kicking net, swinging his helmet in a rage before it fell back onto himself.

Comically, the next month Beckham made amends, proposing to the net following a touchdown against the Green Bay Packers. He wasn’t done there, proposing against the Ravens in the aftermath of a game-winning catch.

Perhaps he is most remembered in New York for his one-handed grab vs. Dallas, though a close second could be the infamous ‘boat photo’ — wherein Giants receivers traveled to Miami before a playoff game on the frozen tundra in Green Bay.

Beckham and most of the receivers were shirtless in what ultimately was a very bad look given his and the team’s poor performance in the January 2017 loss at Lambeau Field. New York’s then No.13 produced a provocative celebration in September 2017 after a touchdown vs. Philadelphia. Beckham got down on all fours before mimic a dog urinating on the field.

Beckham was traded from the Big Apple to the Cleveland Browns in March 2019 for a first and third-round pick, in addition to an exchange of various players. During his first game for the Browns, he wore a Richard Mille watch, said to be worth $190,000 while playing.

After his watching his alma mater win the college football national championship, the former LSU star appeared to hand out wads of cash to Tigers players. During that time college athletes were unable to receive any payment or sponsorship

Resultantly, Beckham was reportedly suspended from the school’s facilities for two years. He has been seen at Death Valley — LSU’s stadium in recent months.

It was a busy night for Beckham, who slapped the behind of a police officer in the LSU locker room postgame. As such, he faced a battery charge which was later rescinded.
