An off-duty Dallas police officer who was severely injured after crashing into a tree in an apparent street-racing accident died on Christmas Eve.

The Dallas Police Department confirmed that Officer Joseph George was the driver of the speeding black Ford Mustang captured in home Nest doorbell footage.

The incident happened around 1.38pm on December 22 when two cars were seen heading eastbound in the 7200 block of E. Mockingbird Lane.

Nest doorbell footage captured two vehicles, a black Ford Mustang (pictured) and a white Suzuki, speeding during an alleged street race

Security footage shows what appears to be George’s car racing a white, two-door Suzuki with an unidentified driver.

The Suzuki can be seen bolting through the neighborhood just seconds before George’s Mustang comes barreling into view.

Then, the heart-stopping sound of tires screeching to a halt can be heard before George crashes his car.

The tire marks left by George’s car during his hasty attempt to break reportedly span the length of a football field, CBS DFW reports.

The Suzuki fled the scene after the crash and the Dallas Police Department is still searching for the driver of that vehicle.
