A man has been shot at by police after he attempted to attack a family member with a knife, according to witnesses.

Emergency services were called to Marrickville Park, Sydney’s inner-west, at about 3pm on Sunday afternoon.

Police confronted the man who was wielding a knife. An officer fired a shot at the man but it missed.

There are no reported injuries.

The man was arrested and taken to Newtown Police Station.

A number of police vehicles were seen at the park on the corner of Livingstone Road and Frazer Street at about 3pm.

A cricket game being played nearby was not stopped during the incident.

Members of the public shared their shock on Twitter on Sunday afternoon.

‘Just saw someone get shot in Marrickville park! Like 10 police surrounding him and a bunch of kids watching,’ one person tweeted.

‘Really bizarre as we drove past to see all hell breaking lose with officers holding someone down while nearby a large group was having a picnic. I hope everyone is ok,’ tweeted another.
