Olympic sprinter Iwan Thomas has announced the birth of his first child, a son Teddy Ellis Thomas, revealing he was premature after arriving a ‘little bit early and fast’. 

The Welsh sportsman turned TV star revealed the news on social media on Sunday, writing that he ‘wanted to share with you some great and also horrendous news.’

Iwan, 44, explained that hours after his birth on Saturday, Teddy was taken to intensive care at the Princess Anne hospital in Southampton after experiencing problems with his breathing.

Sharing photos of his newborn son, whose mother has not been named by the sportsman, Iwan wrote: ‘My baby boy came into the World on Sat he’s so gorgeous I went home the happiest man alive that night only to be phoned to say he’s been taken to intensive care with trouble breathing.’ 

‘Yesterday was the worst day of my life looking at my everything with tubes everywhere in an incubator. He is now beginning to breathe better for himself without full aid of machines, I now know what true unconditional love is.’

Iwan went on to thank the medical team taking care of Teddy as he continued: ‘I’m in bits worried but must say the staff here at Princess Anne hospital Southampton are truly amazing … not out the woods yet but I will keep you all posted.’

Iwan has remained tight-lipped about the name of his partner, wanting to keep his private life and romance out the public eye. 

However, he did reveal in the comments section that the child’s mother is ‘doing great’, he said: ‘Mum doing great too.. tough time for all but she’s been amazing x.’

The former European and Commonwealth Games 400m champion had been keeping his Instagram followers up to date with the pregnancy since announcing the news in September.

In the announcement video posted on social media Iwan is seen in a plush Lamborghini pulling up outside a closed garage door, as he tells his fans:

 ‘No secret, I love my cars, I love my gadgets. But what is a secret is inside that garage. I’ve cleared some space and got myself a new set of wheels because I wanted you to know about it first.’

The doors open to reveal a pushchair among the dry-ice mist. ‘Look, I know I never talk about my private life but this is some news we have to share,’ he said.

‘Absolutely buzzing, I’m going to be a dad.’

‘And the little driver will be here early next year. I will keep you posted along the way.’

He has also shared several baby scan images to his Instagram, sharing his excitement over the news.
