Omani student, 20, murdered ‘for his Rolex watch’ ‘was entirely blameless’ say police

Omani Kings College student Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Araimi, 20, was stabbed to death

An Omani student who was stabbed to death ‘for his Rolex watch’ outside Harrods ‘was entirely blameless’, a police chief says.

Mohammed Abdullah Al Araimi, 20, was walking home from a restaurant in Knightsbridge, London, when he was jumped by a gang of masked muggers demanding his luxury watch, believed to be a Rolex.

The Kings College politics and economics student, from Princes Gate Apartments, Knightsbridge, was believed to have lived in the UK for the last three years.

He was found unconscious with a blade wound to the back and was pronounced dead at the scene on Brompton Road at 12.39am on Friday 6 December.

A friend of the victim told MailOnline that Mr Al Araimi tried to fight back but was knifed during the struggle.

Detective Chief Inspector Andy Partridge, who is leading the investigation, said: ‘The victim and his friend were entirely blameless, simply enjoying a meal out together.

‘It does appear that the motive for this cowardly attack was robbery.’

His 20-year-old friend was also injured in the attack and taken to hospital for treatment and has since been discharged, police said.

The victim’s friend said: ‘Mohammad was walking past Harrods last night with a friend of his from Bahrain when they were confronted by muggers.

‘One of the thieves tried to steal Mohammad’s expensive watch – I think a Rolex – but he fought back. There was a struggle and he was stabbed.’

‘His friend tried to help and was also stabbed. Mohammad sadly died but his friend survived.’

A post-mortem examination at Westminster Mortuary gave his cause of death as a stab wound.

Scotland Yard detectives have launched a murder investigation and confirmed a second man suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Detective Chief Inspector Partridge added: ‘Mohammed and his friend were returning home from a restaurant when they were approached and assaulted by two male suspects on Basil Street at the junction of Pavilion Road.’

‘Following the attack, the suspects fled on foot along Basil Street in the direction of Sloane Street.

‘I would appeal to anyone who saw two males running along that route, or to drivers who were in Sloane Street around midnight and may have captured any part of this incident on dash-cam footage, to get in contact with my team immediately.’

No arrests have been made and enquiries continue.

The Oman Embassy said: ‘A regrettable stabbing attack took place, claiming the life of the Omani student, Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Araimi.

‘With great sadness and sorrow, the Embassy in London extends its condolences to the family of the deceased.’

While formal identification awaits, Mr Al Araimi’s parents – who are being supported by the Omani Embassy –  plan to fly into the capital, the victim’s friend said.

Mr Al Araimi was among three unconnected killings over 12 hours in the capital this week.

Exauce Ngimbi, 22, was stabbed to death in Clarence Mews, Hackney, on Thursday 5 at 2.30pm.

Mr Ngimbi was pronounced dead shortly after 2.30pm Thursday, after an altercation with a group, Scotland Yard said.

Another man, who was with the victim, was also allegedly knifed in the attack.

He remains in hospital, where his injuries are described as not life-threatening.

Scotland Yard has arrested three men, one aged 23 and two aged 26, and a 14-year-old boy, over the death of Mr Ngimbi.

Crosslom Davis, 20 – a rapper known as Bis – is believed to be the victim of the Deptford attack just after 3.30am on Friday 6.

Detective Chief Inspector John Massey, who is leading the investigation into Mr Davis’s death, said: ‘While we tirelessly work to piece together the events that sadly led to a young man losing his life, I would appeal to those who have information to do the right thing and speak to us.’

The Metropolitan Police do not believe the deaths were linked, and condemned the senseless killings as a ‘tragedy’.
