One-in-five children never drink milk – even on cereal – but more than a third drink a can of fizzy pop every day, a study has found.

A nationwide poll of 1,500 parents with kids aged between five and 11, found that 20 per cent confessed that their child hadn’t drunk any milk since they were babies.

After being weaned on to solid food, parents said their kids simply turned their noses up at milk – even when poured on cereal.

By comparison, the study by Yazoo Kids found that 37 per cent of parents admitted their child drank at least one can of fizzy drink every day.

Asked whether they worried if their child was getting enough calcium, a third said they were.

Dietician Priya Tew said: ‘Calcium is a key nutrient.

Calcium stores are also laid down in childhood, impacting on later life. It is therefore a nutrient to focus on in children’s diets.’
