Men are far more likely to lose their wedding ring than women, a survey has found.

Almost a quarter of men – 24 per cent – admitted they had lost their wedding ring compared to just 14.3 per cent of women.

More people have lost an item of jewellery than any other irreplaceable item

Some 28 per cent of people said they had lost an item of jewellery, followed by 23 per cent who said they had lost a special photo or memento.

The survey of 2,000 UK adults was carried out by specialist insurer, Ecclesiastical which insures many of the nation’s irreplaceable treasures.

It found that more people have lost an item of jewellery than any other irreplaceable item.

The poll also showed that 78 per cent of people have put no protection in place for their most treasured item.

Sarah Willoughby, development director for Ecclesiastical’s fine art, antiques, jewellery and collections business, said: ‘This research provides a fascinating insight into the items that people in the UK treasure, and we know first-hand from our customers how devastating it can be when people lose the things they love most.

‘These items mean so much to people because they provide a connection to the people we love and to the magical memories of our past, like jewellery that has been in families for generations or given to us by a loved one.’
