At least eight people attending a high school graduation party have been shot – one of them fatally – police said Sunday.

Gunfire broke out around a playground in Southwest Philadelphia, resulting in four juveniles – between ages 15 and 17 – being injured, ‘mostly to the legs, maybe one to the arm’.

Four adults, all said to be in their 20s, were also caught up in the incident that occurred shortly after 10pm near South 70th Street and Reed Bird Place.

One of them, a man, was confirmed dead at the hospital.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross said there was no suggestion of an altercation at the gathering of around 60 people prior to the shooting.

Police don’t know if the culprit or culprits left on foot or in a vehicle but they are trying to obtain surveillance footage.

There were about eight or nine shots fired the cop said, adding that they believe the victims were close together when they were wounded. It unclear if any of them were celebrating their own graduation.

It was initially reported that at least five people had been shot – including two men, a woman and a child – as a witness said several bullets were fired.

Law enforcement was searching for suspects Sunday and no one had been arrested. A description of the suspect had not been released.

‘What you got to get at is the hearts and minds of people who want to pull out a gun and fire at a group of 60 people,’ CBS reported Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross said. ‘That’s something that’s even more troubling.’
