One of Melbourne’s most infamous gangsters was shot dead in a hail of bullets on Thursday night.

Underworld figure Nabil Maghnie was killed in the car park of Taco Bell restaurant at Epping in Melbourne’s northern suburbs at 8.30pm on Thursday.

The 44-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. Two others, reportedly including one of Maghnie’s sons, were also wounded.

A crowd of around 30 people gathered at the scene, where blood stains were visible on the footpath.

A criminal source told The Age Maghnie had made plenty of enemies and was a ‘dead man walking’.

‘It was only a matter of time,’ the source said. ‘You can’t do what he did without p***ing off a lot of people – people won’t stand for it.’

A local who heard the gunfire told the Herald Sun she and her husband rushed to the front of their home and saw the commotion.

‘We went outside and saw the ambulances and the police. I can’t believe it, it is ridiculous. It is way too close to home,’ she said.

In 2011, the married father was a victim of another non-fatal shooting at Broadmeadows.

Maghnie was being investigated by police over a double shooting at the Love Machine nightclub in Prahan in April last year.

He has been linked to the Comanchero motorcycle gang, and was a suspect in an attempted hit on notorious Mongol’s bikie Toby Mitchell.

He was on bail for serious driving offences before his death, after crashing his Range Rover at more than 200km/h while under the influence of alcohol and cocaine in May.

Victoria Police said detectives were investigating the circumstances around the shooting.
