Police said one person is helping with inquiries and they are not looking for anyone else.

Nearby Hauturu School was shut down because the area was cordoned off and teeming with armed police.

Parents were told there would be no school because of the incident.

A resident whose house was just outside the police cordon told the New Zealand Herald: ‘We hear there’s one dead but we’re locked in, we can’t get out.

‘There’s no school and we can’t get out to take my child to high school.’

‘They’ve got the Armed Offenders Squad, the men with the big guns there too.’

Detective Inspector Graham Pitkethley said: ‘One person is assisting police with their enquiries and at this stage we are not seeking anyone else in relation to the incident.

‘Police are working to understand the circumstances.’
