One state trooper is shot and killed and another injured in Arizona after a suspect stole an officer’s gun and fired ‘at least two rounds’

  • An Arizona trooper was shot dead and another injured on Wednesday night
  • The pair were called to reports of a car driving erratically along the Interstate
  • When police arrived, there was a fracas and the suspect managed to steal a gun
  • A junior officer who had only graduated two months ago was killed

An Arizona Department of Public Safety trooper was killed and another was injured after a suspect allegedly grabbed a trooper’s gun and shot at the pair during a traffic stop.

The troopers were called about 10pm on Wednesday to reports of a car driving erratically on Interstate 10, near Phoenix, and objects being thrown from the vehicle at other cars, ABC reported.

Colonel Frank Milstead says when police arrived, there was a fracas between officers and the suspect – who managed to get hold of a gun, and fired at least two shots.

Tyler Edenhofer, who had only graduated in May and was about to officially finish his training, was killed, while Dalin Dorris, who Fox News reports has worked with the department since 2005, was shot in the shoulder.

Tyler Edenhofer was taken to hospital covered in an American flag rather than a white sheet after he was shot dead during a traffic stop

Colonel Milstead said he was ‘incredibly proud’ of the troopers, both those involved in Wednesday’s ordeal and those who were not.

‘I’m incredibly proud of the men and women who show up to do this job every day. They’re brave enough to come out and face the unknown,’ he said during a press conference on Thursday morning.

‘Lives have been shattered and ruined, and we’re all in a state of shock this morning.’

The section of the I-10 where Edenhofer was killed, eastbound between Litchfield Road and Avondale Boulevard, is closed as police investigate.

There is no estimated time for reopening and drivers are advised to avoid the area.

Police are yet to name the suspect.
