A knife-wielding man on top of a block of units has refused to come down as police crowd around the property.  

Police were called to the property in Orange, New South Wales, after reports of an armed man standing on the roof of a unit block on at 1pm on Monday.

Dramatic vision from the scene shows the shirtless man, with blood dripping from his leg, waving two kitchen knives at officers below.

At one point the man can be seen holding the knife to his throat.

Police were only able to confirm that officers were responding to an incident on Dalton Street.

Pedestrians and motorists are being urged to avoid the area and surrounding streets have been blocked off from the public.
