Oribe Canales, the legendary hairstylist who worked with Jennifer Lopez died at age 62

Legendary hairstylist Oribe, who worked with actresses and models for decades, died at the age of 62.

The Cuban-born American passed on Monday morning, according to his friend, makeup artist Mary Greenwell.

‘ORIBE is one of the great “original” hairdressers whose iconic status grew along side the supermodels of the 80’ and 90’,’ she wrote.

‘While we don’t have an official statement from the family at this time, we can confirm that this sad news is true,’ a statement from Oribe HQ (via British Vogue) was released. 

‘Oribe was an amazing hairdresser and friend and will be missed. 

‘Out of respect for his partner, Zaki, and his family, we have no further comment at this time.’

‘He was a brilliant hairdresser and simply adored by all.’

He came to fame in the Eighties working on supermodels like Kate Moss and Linda Evanglista at fashion shows.

And one of his first big splashes was Marc Jacob’s famous grunge look.

He went on to work with J-Lo, Lady Gaga, Cher, Kate Moss, Miley Cyrus, Barbra Streisand, and Ashley Graham.

Cyrus said her heart was broken over the bad news and she wishes she could call him one last time. ‘Wish I could hug you, wish I could smell the familiar scent of when you walked in to a room. I’d do anything to tell you one more time how beautiful you make me feel… I love you Oribe and I always will.’

Cindy Crawford took to Instagram for a loving tribute: ‘Oribe — you will be missed! Your incredible talent, your charm and good looks and just enough bad boy to keep us all laughing!’ 

Penelope Cruz was also a big fan of the stylist and they worked together for many years. 

The acclaimed hairstylist split his time between Miami and New York City.

Adriana Lima took to Instagram to share a portrait of Oribe saying, ‘Just received the saddest news, talented, good hearted friend is not with us anymore. RIP Sweet Angel.’ 

Emily Ratajkowski said ‘rest in power’ for her pal Canales, adding, ‘I am so grateful to have been able to work with you and know you. The kind of hair, the king of Miami, the best smile.’  

‘I started working at a hairdressing place that a friend owned in New York,’ Canales told People in 1991. ‘I saw that hairdressers made a lot of money, and it didn’t seem that hard.’

 Beyonce’s stylist Rita Hazan added a sweet tribute.

‘I grew up working for this legend and gorgeous man inside and out! I was only 17 when I walked into his salon and said I’m gonna work here! I was hired on the spot as an assistant to THE @bradjohns333 there was nothing and will never be a salon like that. The energy was electric. 

‘Models, celebs,fashion designers anyone who was anyone was not only a client but a great friend. Oribe was the most generous humble creative soul I have ever met!’

He had an eponymous haircare and fragrance brand.
