The scenes will inevitably shock viewers after the first series of the fantasy drama was released to Amazon Prime on Friday.

It comes after Orlando admitted that filming the sex scenes with co-star Cara was a ‘little awkward’.

Speaking exclusively to MailOnline he said: ‘Yeah, there is isn’t there? Quite punchy, it’s quite punchy. It’s always a little awkward, honestly, there’s a lot of people standing around watching you pretending to have sex, if that’s the same rule for violence or whatever it may be.

‘I don’t think it’s intentionally gratuitous, it leads into the fantasy genre of the show, it’s good.’

Talking about the show in general and his character Rycroft Philostrate, he continued: ‘Well I’ve seen the show, I’m excited to see my friends and family who are all here, which is nice.

‘We are getting dangerously close to the show airing on Amazon Prime on August 30 so it’s the end of a long run of publicity.

‘It’s really great to be talking about something that I think, a project that has with the fantasy lands we can look at the world through today, this great social commentary about refugees, race, sexuality and power abuse.

‘It’s all the brainchild of our creator and show runner Travis Beacham who had this genius idea about 20 years ago and it’s finally come to fruition. It’s been a long time, it’s good.’

While Cara added: ‘The cast made it, and to be honest, the crew and everyone on set. The camaraderie on set, and the passion and the care for every detail.

‘The crew made this what this is, with every single box and everything you turn, I was trying to find the mistakes in this world and you can’t. I know that people can’t see it but they’re there.

‘But Orlando, he’s a brilliant actor and it was amazing to work with someone who had the same passion to make this stand out and be something different.’

Talking about whether her role as fairy, Vignette Stonemoss, was challenging, she continued: ‘For me, I think the physical aspect was really hard, but to be honest with you, it was the emotional journey.

‘She’s the character which I had the least, the furthest away from her life so to try to unpackage what she’s been through and what she’s lost and how she’s so strong…

‘I feel like the more people lose, and the worst the situation was, somehow they manage to deal with it better and there’s that purity about her, this hope that is still left. Some people grow up with too much and lose hope quite fast so it’s crazy.’

Pals: She added: 'But Orlando [pictured], he’s a brilliant actor and it was amazing to work with someone who had the same passion to make this stand out and be something different.'

Cara rose to fame as a model but has since turned her skills to acting, talking about whether she would ‘return’ to modelling, she revealed: ‘Returned? I never left. I don’t think you have to pick and choose what you do, especially as a creative person.

‘There are many different ways to express yourself, I don’t think you should stop yourself from doing anything.’

The interview comes after a trailer for the neo-noir fantasy series showed Orlando and Cara putting on a very steamy show in a risque bedroom scene.

Cara, 26, plays a fairy named Vignette Stonemoss, who rekindles a dangerous affair with a human detective Rycroft Philostrate (Orlando).

The new Amazon series is set in a Victorian fantasy world that is inhabited by both humans and mystical immigrant faeries, who are highly feared by humans and not permitted to fly.

The trailer begins with Philostrate entering the faerie world, who are all flying high above him, when Stonemoss flies to the ground to meet him.

She welcomes him into her world and the pair quickly become lovers, with the duo seen cavorting under the covers until a war seemingly breaks out and she’s separated from her beloved ‘Philo.’

Stonemoss is ultimately captured, and becomes a refugee in a new land, though it’s clear that faeries and other creatures like her are not welcome, as a fight breaks out between a human and a man with ram horns on his head.

In this strange new land, Vignette gets a shocking surprise, when she’s told that her beloved Philo is still alive.

Philo is now a cop, who has been tasked with finding the individuals behind the attacks on faeries and other creatures.

Vignette ultimately finds Philo, and sneaks into his room as he sleeps, holding a knife to his throat, crying, telling him that he, ‘left me in the ashes of my homeland.’

Vignette and Philo rekindle their romance, though at quite a dangerous time, with all of these crimes being committed against faeries.

The city’s uneasy peace collapses when a string of murders reveals a monster no one could imagine as the killer still looms large.

The killer is teased to be ‘something unnatural,’ which is neither human nor faerie.

Tensions are rising in the city as well with a faerie literally being shot out of the sky in one shot late in the trailer.

Indira Varma’s Piety Breakspear says that Vignette loves Philo and that love is going to get her killed.

Carnival Row is slated to debut on Amazon Prime Video August 30, with the streaming service already renewing the show for a second season before the first debuted.
