Outrage over ‘see-through’ female toilets at trendy new city bar after the design error was spotted by people outside

  • Women have been seen through glass panes using the loos in a bar
  • Footage showed them at the Headquarters restaurant in Auckland
  • One of the women was seen naked, possibly wearing a jumpsuit

A popular new bar has been called out after patrons could see women using the female toilet cubicles through clear glass windows.

Vision of three women using the amenities on the first floor of the Headquarters Bar in central Auckland was taken and posted to social media on Sunday.

The loo users were seen in the footage from the waist up, standing up in the cubicle with one of them appearing to be naked while pulling a jumpsuit back on.

She was seen standing up into view after using the toilet and dressing herself, while another two women could be seen adjusting their clothes.

The ‘loo with a view’ vision was taken from outside the venue with crowds milling about, prompting some on social media to ask, ‘how did they get away with doing that?’

The venue formally known as the O’Hagans Irish pub was recently refurbished by owner Leo Molloy, a former Auckland mayoral candidate.

It’s new look was promised to ‘revolutionise’ the city’s waterfront scene.

Mr Molloy, who opened the new bar last Friday, told the NZ Herald the issue was being fixed.

‘We were going to have Panama shutters so people could choose to have a view or not but we are having them fixed today,’ he said.

‘It was deemed a good idea at the time to have a loo with a view but based on the negative feedback we will frost them out.’

Mr Malloy also told them he had recently replaced the glass panels.

The windows had been frosted over before it was done up and rebranded.

Meanwhile, the footage sparked outrage and laughs from hundreds of online commenters.

‘We went to the new O’Hagan’s called HQ. And the female toilet is see through from the outside. Just be careful ladies,’ the social media post read.

‘Oh! Reminder not to wear a jumpsuit there then,’ one joked after seeing the woman appearing to put the jumpsuit back on.

‘Noticed this on Friday night! It’s ridiculous,’ another said, while one more wrote she was ‘disgusted’.

‘This is gross. They need to frost those windows ASAP!!!’

‘That’s actually really alarming and a breach of privacy for those who don’t realise, plus imagine wearing a jumpsuit,’ another wrote.

Mr Malloy told Stuff.co.nz he would place a film over the windows by Tuesday admitting it was a ‘minor’ design fault.

‘I went down … after I read the complaint, and you can’t see anything. You can see shoulders and head but not when they’re using the loo,’ he said.

‘The loo faces the opposite direction. The person would have to straddle the loo and look in the opposite direction to be seen.’

A spokesperson from the Office of Privacy Commissioner in New Zealand said it was looking into the incident.

‘If anyone who was at Headquarters would like to provide information to us about this matter, you can contact our office,’ the spokesperson said.

‘If your privacy has been harmed, you may wish to make a formal complaint.’
