Paedohpiles target children on online game Roblox

A horrified Sydney mother has claimed paedophiles sent vulgar messages to her 10-year-old daughter while she played popular new online game Roblox.

Shannon Mitchell, 45, said she didn’t initially think anything of letting her daughter use the chat feature on the simulated reality game to talk with school friends.

But when the young girl began using sexual terms she obviously didn’t know the meaning of, Mrs Mitchell said she became extremely concerned.

‘She started coming out with all these things like, ‘I want to put my penis in your vagina. I want to lick your p***y. I want to sleep with you’,’ she told Daily Mail Australia.

‘It was things you don’t expect your 10-year-old child to come and say to you.’

‘I was quite shocked to begin with and then it turned to anger and then it turned to tears because her innocence was shattered.’

After questioning her, Mrs Mitchell said her daughter admitted she’d seen them on Roblox.

Mrs Mitchell said she immediately checked her iPad and discovered explicit messages, in which her daughter had mentioned she was 10-years-old.

‘She knows about the birds and the bees but that’s the extent of it – she hasn’t been subject to that kind of talk, that kind of conversation.’

Mrs Mitchell said she deleted the Roblox app and discussed internet safety with her daughter.

Kayla Bailey, a mother-of-two from Perth, told 9News her nine-year-old daughter had also been targeted on Roblox, which she dubbed a ‘paedophile’s gateway.’

Ms Bailey said she was sitting with her daughter while she was playing online and noticed an inappropriate message from an older male asking where she had been all weekend.

Roblox, which is aimed at children starting from the age of eight, has 30 million active users.

Concerns were first raised about the game six months ago when a British father claimed he was propositioned by paedophiles within 15 minutes of playing the game on his eight-year-old son’s account.

According to the eSafety Commissioner, Roblox has two chat modes – for children under the age of 13 and for teens above.

‘When a user under the age of 13 signs up with their correct birth date, they are automatically put in this mode. Parents may transition their child to the next mode via the account settings.’

Abuse can be reported on the game’s app in the ‘report’ tab under account settings.
