‘Paedophile principal’ Malka Leifer secretly filmed through car keys and water bottles in Israel

A covert operation has uncovered an alleged paedophile principal shopping and socialising in Israel after faking mental illness and claiming to be unfit to stand trial.

Malka Leifer, the ex-principal of Melbourne’s ultra-orthodox Jewish Adass Israel Girls School was captured on hundreds of hours of secret surveillance – with private investigators using cameras hidden in car keys and water bottles to film her.

Dassi Erlich and her two sisters Nicole Meyer and Elly Sapper claim Ms Leifer – a mother of eight – sexually abused them while they were students at the school between 2003 and 2006.

Ms Leifer fled to Israel in 2008 and has been fighting extradition since 2014. She is wanted on 74 counts of child sex abuse.

More than 200 hours of footage of Ms Leifer has been captured showing her visiting shops and socialising with others in Immanuel, Israel – despite her claims that she is unable to stand trial due to her impaired mental state and inability to communicate.

Private investigator Tsafrir Tsahi told the ABC a regular water bottle with a camera inside was one of the methods used to film Ms Leifer.

The filming is part of an investigation being carried out by anti-child abuse organisation Jewish Community Watch.

‘She was claiming that she was, in the lawyer’s words in Israel, a “sack of potatoes”, She was claiming that she wasn’t able to understand what was going on, she wasn’t able to have basic human interactions; she needed a carer for her daily living,’ Dassi Elrich said.

Ms Leifer’s lawyer Yehuda Fried said he was unable to speak clearly to his client due to her impaired mental state.

Ms Elrich said the footage showed Ms Leifer was being deceitful about her incapacity.

‘To me, it’s felt like the system has been getting played. Anyone with common sense can see that this is a sham,’ she said.

Private investigators disguised themselves as construction workers in order to secretly film Ms Leifer.

She was filmed speaking on the phone, catching the bus, shopping and buying toys for her grandchildren.

The footage was given to Israeli police in February, and Ms Leifer was later arrested.

Israel’s Supreme Court ruled Ms Leifer had obstructed justice by faking mental illness. She will appear in court on Wednesday as extradition efforts continue.
