The pilot of a Virgin Australia plane which burst a tyre on takeoff was forced to circle in the air for three hours before making a dramatic emergency landing.

Terrified passengers on board the Perth-bound flight faced an anxious wait as the plane looped off the Queensland coast in a bid to burn fuel. 

The 737 finally touched down at around 1am at Brisbane airport, where passengers were forced to remain overnight.

Emergency crews were on standby on the airport runway, but they were not required.  

There were no reports of injuries.
