Pantry porn sweeps internet as people share luxury larders

Never mind having a flashy car or the latest flat-screen TV; pantries have been revealed as the new status symbol for proud homeowners – and it’s all thanks to the Great British Bake Off.

Interiors experts claim so-called ‘pantry porn’ is sweeping the internet as cooking enthusiasts and interiors buffs flaunt pictures of their colourful and meticulously organised kitchen shelves online.

And it seems that Bake Off fever has transcended our TV screens and is now inspiring home renovation plans too.

That’s according to Houzz UK, an online platform for home renovation and design, who analysed its users’ activity and found that pantry cupboards have risen to become one of the most ‘saved’ photo categories on the site that hosts more than 15 million photos of professionally designed homes.

In fact, the third most popular photo in the UK right now is a stylish, midnight blue pantry which has been saved over 300,000 times on the site.

The data also reveals that pantry related searches shot up to one of the top 10 searches on the site this September – just days after the latest series of Bake Off returned to our screens.

This followed six months of no pantry related searches in the top 10, leading experts to conclude that the surge in popularity can be attributed to the baking show, which came to a dramatic finale last night.

‘A modern take on the traditional larder, these storage workhorses look set to continue to lead the way when it comes to kitchen features, with several examples making their way into the most popular photos on Houzz.

‘However we know that organising pantries is not the easiest job, both during renovations and once all your baking goods are piled up there. Luckily the Houzz community has some good ideas into

How to create a swoon-worthy pantry

How to prepare and maintain the space so that you can fulfil all your baking potential – according to Victoria Harrison:

• Get on the right level Organise heavy items such as mixers on a shelf that’s just the right height for use so you don’t have to stretch up or bend down to access them. Lightweight grocery items like sugar and flour could be kept up high, and items you don’t use often (or food you want the kids to be able to grab themselves) can be kept lower down.

• Clearly see everything Floor to ceiling open shelving is popular as it’s a practical way to store lots of items whilst also being an easy way to take stock of all supplies. The shallower the shelves, the less likely you are to lose things towards the back. Pale wood interiors are used in pantries on Houzz as they can help cut down on dark corners.

• Group items together For bakers in a rush, a clever organisation tip is to keep all ingredients and decorations together in a single basket to make them easy to grab and store.
