Parent Trap star Joanna Barnes dies at home aged 87 following a lengthy illness

Joanna Barnes has died aged 87.  

The actress, known for her roles in both the original and remake of blockbuster The Parent Trap, passed away at home in California following a lengthy illness, as confirmed by her family. 

In the original 1961 film, Joanna played gold-digger Vicki Robinson, but the 1998 production, starring Lindsay Lohan, saw her in the role of Vicki Blake – the mother of renamed schemer Meredith.

The acting veteran leaves behind two sisters, Lally and Judith, and three stepchildren, John, Laura, and Louise. 

Joanna boasts an impressive filmography spanning more than four decades and has starred in titles including Tarzan, the Ape Man, The War Wagon and Auntie Mame – which earned her a Golden Globe Award nomination for New Star of the Year.

She has also starred in numerous TV series, including The Trials of O’Brien and 21 Beacon Street, while also featuring as a frequent panellist in the early years of the syndicated version of What’s My Line?

Joanna was also a keen writer and columnist. 

She covered both non-fiction (Starting from Scratch – a home decorating book) and fiction (The Deceivers and Pastora to name a few) and wrote a weekly book review for the Los Angeles Times.

The gifted star most certainly had a glittering career, but with tributes flooding in for the actress on social media, the common theme was remembering her ‘beauty’ and ‘sass’ in The Parent Trap.
