  • The plane eventually landed safely and no one was hurt during the manoeuvre

Air passengers were caught on camera swigging from a whisky bottle and praying together after being told that their plane would have to make an emergency landing.

The footage was captured on board a Swift Air Boeing 737-400 flight heading from the Las Americas International Airport near Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, to Miami, America.

The plane had been in the air just over half an hour before it began to experience engine problems, according to local media reports.

Shortly before the video began, the passengers were told that the aircraft was experiencing difficulties and that the pilot would have to perform an emergency landing.

In the clip, the passengers can be heard speaking in unison as they grip hold of one another’s hands across the aisles and over the head rests of the seats.

The passengers sway slightly as they hit a patch of turbulence but begin applauding after the group prayer comes to an end.

They continue to chat among themselves as they prepare to make their emergency return, which is where the video ends.

The pilot turned the flight around and headed back toward its origin station to make the landing.

Fortunately, it returned without further incident and no one was hurt during the manoeuvre.

It is thought that a replacement Boeing 737-400 landed in Miami with the passengers on board after a five-hour delay.

The footage, which is thought to have been captured on Monday, has since been shared online and viewed thousands of times.

One social media user, UlseRubio, commented: ‘The guy with the whisky bottle is the smartest.’

Another, Rodmonti, said: ‘Most of them are praying while only a few are drinking in [potentially] their last moments.’
