‘I’m just happy I could help’: Passing driver is hailed a hero after he pulls over and calmly puts out a car fire

A passing driver has been hailed a hero for pulling over and calmly putting out a car which was on fire by the side of the road.
The incident happened yesterday, on Denby Dale Road near Wakefield at around 3.40pm.
Dash cam footage shows Maciej Kozubal, 42, a factory worker and father-of-three from Barnsley driving along when he notices the blue car pulled over in a lay-by.

Maciej bravely approaches the car (pictured) which is on fire with a fire extinguisher in his hand
He then pulls over himself, gets out the car and walks towards the other vehicle to put out the flames that had begun to spread along the bottom of the bumper.
He uses a small fire extinguisher to put out the fire, which takes him only a matter of seconds.
He then opens the bonnet which has smoke billowing from it and checks the rest of the car for more fire.
In the car was Maciej Kozubal, his wife, his daughter, 13, and his daughter’s best friend.

He said: ‘It was around 3.40pm when me and my wife and daughter were coming from my daughters horse riding lesson.
‘I stopped to help because it was on fire and I didn’t really see anyone with a fire extinguisher so I stepped in to help.
‘I’m just happy I could help even the slightest. I was nervous to get closer to the fire but I did eventually because if I didn’t extinguish the fire it could’ve burnt the engine or the fire could’ve spread across the car.
‘I just stopped, extinguished the fire, then binned the empty fire extinguisher and drove away. I think nobody was hurt at all.
‘I also luckily completely extinguished the fire. I expected some fire under the bonnet, but it was only smoke coming out from the engine.
‘I think that the fire was caused by the hot exhaust pipe touching the plastic cover under the engine bay (that was actually burning under the car) maybe something else was involved too.
‘If the fire was bigger it could have been a threat for the cars driving by, that’s another reason why I helped.’
