Passy Pete the Lobster predicts six more weeks of summer

Punxutawney Phil the Groundhog may have a new rival.

According to Passy Pete the Lobster, we will have six more weeks of summer. The Maine lobster predicted the extended season for the third year in a row.

The crustacean who got his name from being fished out of the Passagassawakeag River, made the prediction by selecting a scroll with his claws.

The scroll read, ‘Down in Belfast the weather is holding fast, summer will last six more weeks!’

Passy Pete was welcomed by a select group who called themselves the ‘barons’.

They were dressed in tuxedo t-shirts and top-hats and fished out the Maine Lobster.

The tradition started in 2015 after replicating the popular Groundhog Day ceremony.

Now the tourist town of Belfast hopes it’s just another unique trait that will attract more people to their small town.

Two business owners, David Crabiel and David Brassbridge came up with the eccentric idea as a way to have fun.

Brassbridge told WLBZ News: ‘It doesn’t take a lot of time, it doesn’t take a lot of money, it’s just a way to get together and have fun.’

And apparently Passy Pete has yet to get it wrong, though the forecasts for the Northeast appear to be dropping to fall-like conditions in the coming weeks.

‘The last two years he was right, in mid-October it was still 65 degrees in Belfast and that’s pretty close to summer for Maine,’ Crabiel said.

And if Passy Pete is right, warm weather will linger through the end of October.

Passy Pete isn’t too far off from Punxutawney Phil seeing his shadow to predict the end of winter.
