As the US and England prepare for a titanic semi-final clash in the Women’s World Cup on Tuesday night in Lyon, France, old rivalries are being ignited online with a war of memes billing the showdown as the ‘Second Revolutionary War’.

The United States reigned triumphant over France on Friday in an emotional and hard-fought slender 2-1 win, in which Rapinoe bagged both goals to edge USWNT another step closer to consecutive World Cup glory.

But Jen Ellis’ squad will face their toughest feat yet, when they do battle against England’s young and hungry Lionesses, who are ranked at No.3 in the world – just two spots behind the US in first.

Tensions between the two teams have never been higher after England manager Phil Neville called into question the ‘etiquette’ of the US team, accusing them of spying on his squad in an explosive press conference on Monday evening.

And now emotions have boiled over onto Twitter too, with fans of Team USA urging their favorite players – on the week of America’s birthday – to ‘beat those redcoats one last time’.

‘Sorry, England. It’s America’s birthday week. We do what we want at the beginning of July. You’re just going to have to take another “L”,' Brian Wedig tweeted

‘The week of July 4…. We have no other option than to send them packing just as we did in 1776,’ Laurie Seagreaves tweeted on Tuesday morning.

Brian Wedig agreed, adding: ‘Sorry, England. It’s America’s birthday week. We do what we want at the beginning of July. You’re just going to have to take another “L”.’

Tuesday’s game comes just two days before July 4 celebrations will erupt around the country, marking 243 years the since Declaration of Independence was signed, freeing the 13 American colonies from the rule of the British monarchy.

Congress had initially voted to announce independence two days earlier on July 2 – today’s date – which fans are taking as another good omen on social media.

Prompted in 1765, the American colonials’ revolt was first spurred by the belief that they felt their views were being properly represented in British Government, with monarchs making news laws and imparting higher taxes on the colonies without discussion.

A decade of protests and arguments soon erupted into all-out war, with the first shot fired on April 19, 1775 – and the conflict lasted until 1783, when a peace treaty was signed with the Brits.

‘The 50 stars have aligned for US this week,’ tweeted Erin McPartland of tonight’s uncannily timed match. ‘Let’s go get this win @USWNT’.
