Patriots QB Tom Brady downplays decision to put $39.5 million mansion on the market

Tom Brady attempted to assuage the fears of New England Patriots fans on Monday by insisting his recently publicized decision to put his Massachusetts mansion on the market is not an indication that he’s preparing to retire.

‘You shouldn’t read into anything,’ he told Boston radio station WEEI’s ‘The Greg Hill Show’ on Monday morning.

The 42-year-old six-time Super Bowl champion recently renegotiated his contract, giving himself an $8 million raise for the upcoming season and the chance become a free agent for the first time in the spring of 2020.

That news was followed quickly by last week’s revelation that Brady’s home was up for sale. However, Brady said Monday that his five-bedroom Brookline, Massachusetts mansion with a $39,500,000 asking price won’t be easy to sell, which is why he’s listing it now.

‘I think it takes a long time to sell a house,’ he said, as quoted by ESPN. ‘My house is a little bit of an expensive one, so it doesn’t fly off the shelf in a couple weeks.

‘I think I’m at a point in my life where there’s a lot of considerations that go into playing,’ he continued. ‘I have a very busy professional life, I have a very busy personal life. Any decision that’s made has to consider everything. I’m certainly at a place where I’ve been in the same place for a long time, and I love playing for the Patriots. I have such a great relationship with [team owner Robert] Kraft, Coach [Bill] Belichick and our team.

‘We’ll just worry about that when that happens,’ said Brady, who reiterated his hope to play until he’s 45. ‘This isn’t the time to worry about it.’

Although Brady did not rule out finishing his career with another team, he gave no indication on Monday that he’s thinking about anything besides the 2019 NFL season.

NFL’S HIGHEST-PAID QBs FOR 2019 SEASON

1. Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh Steelers: $45 million

2. Matt Ryan, Atlanta Falcons: $44.75 million

3. Russell Wilson, Seattle Seahawks: $35 million

4. Nick Foles, Jacksonville Jaguars: $30.75 million

5. Kirk Cousins, Minnesota Vikings: $28 million

6. Kyler Murray, Arizona Cardinals: $24.08 million

T-7. Tom Brady, New England Patriots: $23 million

T-7. Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints: $23 million

‘I think I’m in a great mental, emotional place to approach the season,’ Brady said. ‘There is no point in worrying about things like that. There are so many hypotheticals – this and that – and if you spend time all your time and energy on those things, you [lose] track of what’s most important, which is what’s happening right now.

‘This is where I want to be. This is the team I want to be a part of, and leading. I’m really excited about doing that. There’s really not much to read into it than that.’

‘I don’t want my mind convoluted with thoughts that are premature, and ones that I’m worried about beyond what the current situation is – which is us trying to go achieve what we all hope we can achieve.’

Brady’s new $70million extension that runs through 2021 and includes an $8 million pay raise for the 2019 season. With the raise, Brady will now make $23 million for the 2019 season, making him the seventh-highest paid quarterback in the NFL.

However, the final two years are likely to be voided for salary cap purposes, according to ESPN, which means Brady could become a free agent for the first time next spring. (As a way of navigating the NFL’s restrictive salary cap, teams often re-sign or extend players with the expectation that the contract will be re-worked before it expires)

According to a tweet from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the new deal gives the Patriots an additional $5.5 million in salary cap space for the 2019 season.

Furthermore, Brady’s new deal includes a provision prohibiting the Patriots from using the franchise tag on Brady, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

While the thought of Brady on the open market could cause panic among Patriots fans, ESPN is reporting that he is expected to re-sign with New England for the 2020 season if he does decide to return to play at 43.

Before his contract was renegotiated, Brady was the 20th highest-paid quarterback heading into the 2019 campaign, ranking behind his former backup, San Francisco 49ers signal caller Jimmy Garoppolo ($17.95 million)

Brady, who led the Patriots to a 13-3 win over the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl 53, is one of just four players to win six NFL titles. The others all played for Vince Lombardi’s mighty Green Bay Packers teams in the 1960s: Hall of Famers Herb Adderley and Forrest Gregg and their teammate, Fuzzy Thurston.

He is the only player with six Super Bowl titles.

Adderley, 80, told the AP earlier this year that he believes it will take another 100 years for someone else to join the exclusive club, although he figures Brady will make it a moot point with a seventh ring before he decides to retire.

‘Oh yes, indeed. He has a shot at it as long as he plays,’ Adderley said.
