Patriots WR Julian Edelman ‘facing four-game ban for violating the NFL’s PED policy’

  • According to ESPN, the ruling is already under appeal
  • A four-game suspension would cost Edelman around $470,000 in base salary
  • Edelman has not played since 2016 after tearing an ACL during the 2017 NFL preseason and consequently being placed on injured reserve
  • One of QB Tom Brady’s favorite targets, the 32-year-old Edelman has 425 catches and 24 touchdowns in 103 regular-season games

New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman is facing a four-game suspension for a violation of the league’s performance-enhancing substance policy.

According to a report by ESPN, the suspension is under appeal. This is the first time the converted college quarterback has tested positive before. A few other players have had their suspensions overturned on appeal, such as Seattle cornerback Richard Sherman in 2012.

A four-game suspension would cost Edelman around $470,000 in base salary.

The Patriots start their 2018 campaign against Houston, Jacksonville and Detroit before they host a divisional game against Miami.

Edelman has not played since 2016 after tearing an ACL during the 2017 NFL preseason and consequently being placed on injured reserve.

The 32-year-old is entering his 10th season in the NFL.

The Patriots had already lost receiver Danny Amendola to free agency this off-season and traded Brandin Cooks to the Los Angeles Rams, so the loss of Edelman would be significant. However, the team has added receiver Jordan Matthews, who helped the Philadelphia Eagles beat New England in Super Bowl LII, and veteran Kenny Britt was acquired last season and could be a factor in 2018.
