Patton Oswalt helps finish wife’s book after she died

Crime author Michelle McNamara’s final book is due to be released in February, almost two years after she passed away.

Comedian Patton Oswalt, who was married to her for 11 years, helped to finish the tome after she passed away unexpectedly in her sleep.

Called I’ll Be Gone In The Dark, it chronicles one woman’s attempt to unmask a real-life Californian serial murderer that McNamara dubbed the Golden Gate Killer.

Patton Oswalt has announced that a book that his late wife Michelle McNamara left unfinished when she died suddenly last year is going to be published

The tome, entitled I'll Be Gone In The Dark, will be available from February next year with an afterword penned by him after he helped finish it

The book, which is being published by Harper Collins, will contain an afterword penned by Oswalt, who has openly discussed his battle with grief in a series of tweets and Facebook posts.

Oswalt announced the release date on Twitter on Monday, simply saying of the book: ‘It’s amazing.’

The widower told fans that he was working to finish the book in August last year in a heart-wrenching post about coming to terms with McNamara’s death.

‘Michelle McNamara got yanked off the planet and out of life 102 days ago,’ he wrote.

‘She left behind an amazing unfinished book, about a horrific series of murders that everyone — including the retired homicide detectives she worked with — was sure she’d solve. The Golden State Killer.

‘She gave him that name, in an article for Los Angeles Magazine. She was going to figure out the real name behind it…

‘Any spare energy I’ve managed to summon since April 21st I’ve put toward finishing Michelle’s book. With a lot of help from some very amazing people.

‘It will come out. I will let you know. It’s all her. We’re just taking what’s there and letting it tell us how to shape it. It’s amazing.’

McNamara passed away suddenly in her sleep due to prescription drugs and an undiagnosed medical condition, which proved fatal in combination.

He listed the drugs as Xanax, Adderall and Fentanyl.

Since her passing Oswalt has started dating actress Meredith Salanger, and the pair are now engaged.

Oswalt has an eight-year-old daughter by McNamara and has credited her with helping him to recover after the tragedy.
