Paul Gascoigne, 53, sleeps rough on the forest floor in an arm brace

Paul Gascoigne was back in the thick of it on Sunday after returning to Italy’s version of I’m A Celebrity in an arm brace after he dislocated his shoulder.

The football legend, 53, had to spend a week in hospital after sustaining a shoulder injury during an endurance game on the reality show and looked thrilled to be back in the forest to continue filming the series.

But the harsh reality of living off the land soon crashed back around him as he was seen eyeing up a questionable mattress, before crashing out on the floor.

Sleeping somewhat awkwardly with his arm wrapped up, Paul tried to get some rest.

The Mirror had revealed that Paul would be sleeping in an actual bed instead of the sandy ground like his campmates, – but this seemed not to be the case on Sunday.

He was later seen spitting something into a bucket as he chatted to co-star Awed – Simone Paciello.

A day prior, he couldn’t contain his emotion as he burst into tears upon his return on Thursday’s episode and said that he missed the other contestants ‘more than anything else in the world.’

Doctors have instructed Gazza to follow specific rules in order to support his recovery.

Honouring his comeback, the contestants congregated at the main camping area on Day 19 of the show to chat with the football ace.

The sports icon, who famously cried after England lost to West Germany during the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Turin, was seen adjusting his arm brace on the island near Hondura.

YouTube star Simone sympathetically rested his hand on a joyful Paul’s neck as they caught up.

Meanwhile Daniela Martan smiled affectionately at the footballer who sported two-tone swimming trunks.

Paul instantly adjusted to island life as he was seen walking through the campsite before changing into a relaxed shirt.

Prior to his reentry earlier this week, Paul revealed he would be willing to return to the programme despite his accident.

The former Lazio star said he’s ‘quite good’ and added that his shoulder is ‘so, so’ as the show’s presenter Ilary Blasi asked for updates on his health condition.

During another episode last week, Paul could be seen gripping his arm in pain after completing an assault course with his fellow islanders.

He appeared in good spirits later on as he joked that the doctors spoke better English than the show’s host, Ilary.

Paul also said he will go clubbing with footballer and Ilary’s husband, Francesco Totti, once the show is over.

Viewers subsequently took to Twitter to show their support and appreciation to the English contestant.

One person said: ‘Give us Paul Gascoigne back.’

While another wrote: ‘Gascoigne is the number 1, he makes me laugh so much with his random names and crazy stories. I love him.’ A third wrote: ‘Paul Gascoigne is my winner.’

A different viewer read: ‘Anyway, Gascoigne and Totti would score a lot together! Beware Ilary!!’

Another penned: ‘Paul Gascoigne, let’s be best friends.’

One other added: ‘I watching Isola [I’m A Celeb] just for Paul Gascoigne.’

According to The Sun, producers of the series met recently to discuss whether Paul was fit enough to continue on with the show.

He was flown to hospital for emergency check-ups after sustaining his injury, forcing him to temporarily pull out of filming.

A friend of Paul’s told the publication: ‘He’s dislocated his shoulder. It’s such a shame as he was doing so well.

‘He’s resting while the medical team check him out. The producers are very concerned. He may be pulled out. There are insurance issues as well for them to consider.’

MailOnline contacted a representative for Paul for comment at the time, but they are yet to respond.
