Paul Gascoigne has been questioned by police on suspicion of sexually assaulting a woman on a train.

The 51-year-old former England international was held by British Transport Police at a railway station after a woman alleged that he touched her inappropriately, according to The Sun.

No arrests have been made and Gascoigne was later released pending further inquiries, with the police also appealing for witnesses to the incident.

The former Tottenham and Lazio midfielder has been battling alcohol addiction for a number of years, and this represents another blow.

He was held at Durham station on Monday night after the alleged incident, which supposedly happened on board a train to York.

There had been recent hope that he had dealt with his demons after finding love with 49-year-old divorcee Sara Lovatt.

Gascoigne has been staying in a South Leicestershire village 12 miles from Sara’s home.

His problems reared their head again earlier this month. 

He was found naked in a communal area and then left an appearance on Soccer AM early.

He blamed sleeping tablets and said he was unwell, rubbishing claims he had been drinking. 

A police spokesman told MailOnline: ‘Officers were called to Durham station at 6.45pm on Monday August 20 following reports that a woman had been sexually assaulted on board a CrossCountry train from York.

‘No arrests have been made and officers are continuing to make inquiries into this incident as part of an investigation.’

Gascoigne played 51 times for England during his career.
