Pauline Hanson Sarah Hanson-Young clash same-sex marriage

Pauline Hanson has been accused of running a ‘fear campaign’ against same-sex marriage in a heated debate with Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young.

Speaking on Sunrise, Ms Hanson suggested the postal vote should be taken through to the next election to avoid letters being tampered with, stolen or sold on eBay.

‘I think it’s farcical, I think it’s a joke, it should have gone in to the next election. We’re being treated like fools in regard to this plebiscite,’  the One Nation leader said.

‘There should be no hatred in this. I’m sick of people saying they’re homophobic (for voting no).’

But South Australian senator Hanson-Young disagreed, saying: ‘We have to vote yes.’

‘You’ll run the fear campaign Pauline… You’ll say that kids can’t call their parents mum and dad. We all know that’s crap, that’s absolute crap,’ she added.

Attempting to interject, Ms Hanson shot back: ‘Sarah, I didn’t say that.’

‘This is about letting couples who love each other get on and get married,’ Ms Hanson-Young continued, speaking over the top of Ms Hanson.

‘Sarah there you go again, I’m sick and tired of you and the Greens, you misrepresent my words and what I’ve said,’ Ms Hanson protested.

Ms Hanson-Young disagreed, saying sarcastically: ‘I guess you’re being silenced again aren’t you Pauline? Not allowed to have your say? Get over it. ‘

Last week Ms Hanson said legalising gay marriage could lead to children being banned from calling their parents mum and dad.

‘Sorry you can no longer call that parent mum or dad because it is going to offend the children who don’t have a mum or dad,’ she told the Senate on Wednesday.

‘So is it going to be “you must call that person [by their names]” and there is no longer mums or dads, it’s no longer grandma or granddad?

‘This is the impact that it’s having in other places, so I’ve been told.’

Senator Hanson said voters should think of the children of gay married couples, who wouldn’t get to vote on the issue.

She said they may one day say: ‘You’ve denied us the right to a mum and dad.’

The controversial MP declared she would ignore a majority ‘yes’ result of the upcoming postal vote because it wouldn’t be reflective of the people’s wishes.
