Peloton sparks sexism mockery over commercial called ‘The Gift That Gives Back’ showing a husband surprising his wife with an exercise bike on Christmas morning

  • Advert, titled ‘The Gift That Gives Back’ has come under harsh criticism online
  • Twitter users claim the husband wants his ‘already thin’ partner to lose weight
  • One social media user wrote: ‘So it’s an insulting gift and completely useless’

A newly released advert promoting a $2,245 exercise bike has been slammed by social media users who claim it is disrespectful and sexist.

Peloton released the commercial, titled ‘The Gift That Gives Back’, online in November which shows a man giving his wife one of the company’s exercise bikes for Christmas while she gasps in shock.

The woman exclaims: ‘A Peloton!’

She then begins documenting her use of the exercise bike throughout the year in what emerges to be a video she makes for her husband to thank him for the gift.

One social media user wrote: ‘Has anyone noticed how humiliating and misogynistic this new Peloton ad is? The woman is rail thin already and her a****** husband thinks she’s still not thin enough.’

Her video ends with her saying: ‘A year ago, I didn’t realize how much this would change me. Thank you.’

The commercial has come under harsh criticism online by social media users who claim it encourages negative stereotypes as well as implying that a husband will get a more attractive wife in return for giving her the exercise bike.

Vice declared that the ‘Peloton advert woman is absolutely not okay’.

Katie Way writes: ‘The woman is shown sitting on the couch next to her husband the following holiday season, presenting the footage to him of herself performing excitement about and gratitude for her exercise bike in a supercut, evidence of fealty to the Peloton and, by extension, to him. “Thank you,” says the Peloton woman’s avatar on the screen.

‘She turns to him, searching his face and trying to gauge his reaction. He grants her a smile, a squeeze on the shoulder. She has appeased her benevolent, Peloton-bestowing god… for now.’

Twitter users descended on to the site in a frenzy to show their disdain for the advert.

One user wrote: ‘Nothing says ”Maybe you should lose a few pounds” like gifting your already rail-thin partner a Peloton.’

Another said: ‘Hands up if the Peleton Christmas ad made you sick in your mouth a little bit AND resolve never to be ”that guy” in a relationship?’

Peloton has been contacted for comment.
