It comes after last week Penny revealed she initially dismissed her earliest menopause symptoms as Covid-19.

The model and special police constable first began to experience symptoms during lockdown, but the star was in ‘denial’ as she didn’t think she was ‘old’ enough.

During an appearance on last Thursday’s Lorraine, Penny told how her doctor initially supplied her with antidepressants instead of HRT, before explaining how it was her Loose Women pals who told her she was going through the menopause.

Explaining how she didn’t realise what her symptoms, including hot flushes, was, she explained to Christine: ‘Once women are able to open up and share their stories, others feel less alone.

‘When I first had my symptoms, it was during lockdown so initially, I thought it might be Covid-19, with the heat and the flushes. They were disrupting my sleep so I couldn’t function.

‘Not every woman suffers the same way, some women almost manage to find excuses, maybe, for the bad times they’re going through in their life.’

She continued: ‘I was thinking maybe it’s because my husband was diagnosed with prostrate cancer or lockdown, maybe I was in denial. You’re constantly in denial. Maybe you’re thinking, ‘I’m not getting that old, it can’t be menopause, I’m not ready for that!”

The wife of rocker Rod Stewart went on to explain that her Loose Women ladies confirmed that she was suffering with the menopause as medics misdiagnosed her symptoms.

She said: ‘It’s so important to chat. We need to talk about the more embarrassing things. It wasn’t until I spoke with the women on Loose Women and they said we know what you’re going through. But when I went to my doctor he gave me antidepressants before I got HRT.’

Penny added of the hormone therapy: ‘It won’t work with every woman, the NHS do offer free health checks from the age of 40. Wellbeing Of Women are trying to pull together this basic checklist that can be in any GP office. They give that service every 5 years.’

Stand-in host Christine Lampard told penny: ‘ I’ve been for one of these checks recently. I think it’s a sensible thing to do so you can see how it changes and manage the change.’

With Penny adding: ‘Keep a diary of when you feel fragile and not yourself. Half the population are dealing with it as well as men and families who deal with the suffering.

‘We can’t afford to lose any more nurses from the NHS, 70 percent of them are females. The government should give us what they promised and give us free HRT or at least a discount.

‘HRT I feel like it’s credited me and given me a new lease of life, the red and white that’s the city police I’m with but when it comes to things like this they need more resources.’

Back in April, Penny revealed she is thankful for her husband Rod’s support as she deals with the menopause.

The Loose Women panellist opened up about how she is determined to break down the taboo surrounding the menopause after recently struggling with severe symptoms.

She went on to praise her music legend spouse, 77, for making men more aware of the issue by backing the Menopause Mandate campaign – which has been championed by Penny and TV presenters Davina McCall and Mariella Frostrup.

Penny told The Daily Telegraph: ‘First of all he had empathy towards me and how I was suffering from it. We’ve always been good at communicating with one another and explaining how we feel, so he got to understand.

‘Then he wanted to encourage men to sit up and take note. He’s going: ‘This isn’t just a women’s problem. We need to recognise it.’ It affects husbands, partners, children.’

The star, who married Rod in 2007, recalled how she suffered ‘major meltdowns’ as the symptoms began to impact on her.

Penny – who shares sons Alastair, 16, and Aiden, 11, with Rod – said: ‘I had a couple of major meltdowns. I couldn’t justify my feelings and emotions, couldn’t pull myself out of it and would collapse into a ball of tears of frustration and scream, which is not like me at all.’

Rod previously discussed Penny’s menopause journey on Loose Women and admitted he found the experience ‘frightening’ as he witnessed Penny change ‘from the person I married’.

He said: ‘I googled menopause so much when she was going through it, she was in a fragile situation, I just had to listen and learn and get ready for saucepans being thrown through the kitchen.

‘It was frightening, it wasn’t the person I married, she explained it through the tears and we talked it through.’
