A pensioner was boiled alive in her bed after she was hit by a powerful jet of hot water from a burst pipe in the street outside.

The 64-year-old woman was asleep at 2am when the horrific accident happened in St Petersburg.

The vicious jet of almost boiling water shattered the windows of her ground floor flat and sprayed her causing severe burns.

The unnamed woman died in her flat from ‘severe burns and pain shock’ caused by the scalding water, say Russian reports.

Her 39-year-old son also asleep in the flat was rushed to hospital in a state of ‘deep shock’ and acute burns.

Piped hot water in Russian towns and cities is vital to heat flats in cold winters – but accidents can be deadly. The broken main pipeline was almost nine inches in diameter .

Nearby, a hole opened in the road swallowing a Mercedes van.

Two dozen people living in the block of flats at 2 Komsomolskaya Street in the Krasnoselskiy district of St Petersburg – also in danger of getting burned by hot water jets – were evacuated into a nearby school.

Seven months ago two men died in a cafe when 500 tons of boiling water from a broken pipe flooded the premises.

Resident Nikita Yulgushev posted: ‘Dear God – what is happening in St Petersburg?

‘I live on the ground floor, too, what do I do? Barricade all the windows? Sell the flat? I won’t be able to fall asleep now.’
