Pep Guardiola hails England Women for reaching Euro 2022 final against Germany – as Manchester City boss insists both sides ‘deserve all the credit’ for their styles of football ahead of Wembley showdown on Sunday

  • England will play Germany in Sunday’s Euro 2022 final at Wembley
  • Germany have won  eight Euros titles, no other nation has more than one
  • Pep Guardiola heaped praise on the ‘incredible things’  England have done
  • He said both sets of players ‘deserved all the credit’ and hoped for a ‘good final’

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has heaped praise on the Lionesses after they reached the final of Euro 2022.

England beat Sweden 4-0 in Tuesday’s semi final to see them into their first major final since 2009.

They will face Germany, who beat France 2-1 on Wednesday. Martina Voss-Tecklenburg’s side have won the Euros a record eight times.

Pap Guadiola said both sets of players ‘deserved all the credit’ and hoped for a ‘good final’

‘I think they deserve all the credit, football around the world how they rise and do incredibly good.

‘They deserve what they are getting. Four years ago there was not media or following like this.’

He continued: ‘It happens because they do incredible things with the way, the style. I saw in England and Germany the good football, I hope they can do a good final, it’s a big success for both nations.

‘It’s an incredible scenario at Wembley, a full crowd, hopefully they can enjoy it. Congratulations, it’s so nice for England to arrive in a final.’

England haven’t played in a Euros final since losing 6-2 to Germany in Finland in 2009

England’s last Euros final came 13 years ago, where they were beaten 6-2 by Germany.

It was one of 21 wins Germany have picked up in 27 matches against England, with the Lionesses winning just twice.

One of those wins did come earlier this year, though, when they beat Germany 3-1 in February.

The vast majority of Wembley’s 90,000-strong crowd on Sunday will be hoping for a  repeat, which would give England a first major trophy in women’s football.
