Personal trainer Rachel Dillon reveals tricks for indulging but keeping weight on track on holiday

A personal trainer has offered a look at her typical daily diet when she is on holiday, and revealed her five tricks for indulging but keeping her weight on track.

Rachel Dillon, from Queensland, said while she realises that the ‘last thing’ you want to worry about on holiday is getting in enough exercise and eating well, she does have a few tips that ensure she stays in shape while still enjoying every moment.

‘The first thing I do religiously when on holiday is I fast until about 10 or 11am,’ Rachel posted on her Instagram page.

‘I know I’ll be eating out most nights, so I find pushing my meals back a little helps with saving more of my calories for later in the day.’

Typically, the PT will start her day with a long black coffee with one shot, a ‘dash’ of oat milk and two sweeteners.

She follows this with a late breakfast of bruschetta with poached eggs, tomatoes and prosciutto, before snacking on strawberries throughout the morning.

‘I always start my day with one litre of water, a coffee and either go for a light walk or do a mini workout,’ Rachel shared as her second tip.

‘Moving first thing gets it out of the way and allows me to relax for the rest of the day.’

Lunch is something light to tide Rachael over.

Rachel’s favourite is barramundi salad, which is perfect in the heat as it’s full of protein but reasonably light in carbohydrates.

‘My third tip when you’re on holiday is to walk more,’ Rachel said.

‘I know I’ll be consuming more calories on holiday, so if I can increase my movement, then that’s going to help me balance out my energy expenditure.’

At sundown, the PT might have a cocktail and half a dozen oysters, after having made sure she has been for a long walk that morning (pictured)

Because she is all about balance while on holiday, Rachel said she doesn’t deprive herself of a little of what she loves.

On this particular day, she had a dairy-free gelato with two scoops in a cone mid-afternoon.

She later enjoyed a cocktail with some oysters at sundown.

Finally, dinner is swordfish, vegetables and potatoes. Fish is one of the best things you can choose to eat on holiday, as it’s full of protein and healthy omega 3s and good fats.

When it comes to her other tricks for staying in shape, Rachel said one of the best things you can do is do a grocery shop as soon as you arrive at your location.

‘I personally plan for 1-2 meals out and 1-2 meals in,’ she said.

‘This helps with having some control and means I know what I’m putting into my dishes when I cook.’

Finally, Rachel said it’s all about a little ‘give and take’.

‘If you want to have a few cocktails, maybe skip your entrée or dessert,’ she said.

‘If you want to have dessert, maybe skip your drinks. A little compromise each day goes a long way.’
