A shocking video shows the moment a driver viciously attacked a cyclist with a knife in a road rage attack over the one metre passing rule.

The cyclist, who did not want to be named, was riding in Kings Park with his wife when a motorist passed at a close distance.

He pulled up alongside the car and told the driver that he had overtaken within an unsafe range.

A while later, after spotting the same car in the Zamia Cafe carpark, the man approached the driver to speak to him.

‘He came out of the car with a knife,’ the cyclist said. ‘He hit me on my chest on the left-hand side.’

The attacker is believed to ‘hate bicycles’ and did not appreciate being told off, Perth Now reported.

After suffering minor injuries the cyclist took a step back and instructed his wife to contact police.  The incident is now being investigated.

The man says he has been riding around the city for around six years and the incident has left him shocked.

‘I thought he was going to say sorry, but when I approached him he stormed out of his car,’ he said.

Westcycle chief executive Matt Fulton said the incident reflects how easily a confrontation can get out of control.

‘This shocking incident highlights that the lack of respect from certain people in the community towards cyclists has reached an outrageous level.’

He said the public need to reject the behaviour as acceptable and call people out when serious risk is involved.

WA motorists must leave a gap of one metre between their vehicle and a cyclist, under a new law.
