A frugal landlord car park has been labelled a Christmas Grinch after clamping the cars of families who were enjoying a beachside carols service.

The mass issuing of fines took place as thousands gathered at Scarborough Beach, in Perth’s north, on Sunday.

But as the crowds enjoyed the sunset service, dozens of cars were already being clamped.

And despite the festive cheer of the event, the car park’s landlord was in no such mood and hit each infringing driver with a $170 fine to remove the clamp.

Attendee Melinda Hansen, was hit with the removal fee and believed the fines was unwarranted.

‘I was pretty shocked to be honest, you think the average parking fine is $60, $80 dollars but $170 is pretty atrocious,’ she told 7 News Perth.

‘I reckon it was nothing more than a trap.’

Due to the car park being privately owned the local council, City of Stirling had no control over the fines’ issuing, instead saying the situation was an ‘unfortunate’ one.

‘However, we have written to the property owners and managing agents asking that they reconsider the use of wheel clamping, as there are alternatives available.

‘The Scarborough Christmas Carols is a fantastic and well-attended community event that the City is proud to support each year.’

At the time of the much-loved event, the complex the car park services was closed, which led to the expectation of some Christmastime leniency.
