A foodie has declared which supermarket offers shoppers the ‘best’ roast chicken – and his taste taste spanned across warmth, freshness, tenderness, and seasoning.
Ben, from Perth, was hankering for a delicious roast chook but couldn’t decide where to purchase his meal.
In order to save himself the trouble in future, Ben bought a roast chicken from Coles and Woolworths ($12 each) and measured them up against each other.
After tasting the breast, a piece of skin, a drumstick, and the stuffing from each chicken – the foodie finally declared that the Woolworths roast chook was ‘better’.

The foodie shared a now-viral video of his tasting process.
‘Well, here we go,’ he began. ‘Woolies, Coles – who’s got a better hot chook? Let’s see!’
Ben revealed that he wanted to put both supermarkets ‘to the test’ once and for all.
The Perth man bought the two roast chickens with time stamps that were as close to each other as possible – but Coles already had an advantage.
‘Coles’ chook literally got pulled out of the oven, into the bag, zipped up and given to me. Perfect drop off,’ he said.
But the foodie revealed that Woolies was on ‘equal footing’ because their roast chicken also felt ‘equally as fresh’.
Ben’s method was to first taste the chicken breast, followed by the skin, a drumstick and, lastly, the stuffing.
The foodie tasted the Coles chicken first.
‘Look at that, it’s beautiful,’ he said after taking a bite.
Ben tasted the various elements of the meal and was satisfied by the end of it.
When he moved on to the Woolies roast chicken, he immediately revealed that it ‘looked’ better.
After tasting both chooks, Ben’s judgement was final: he preferred the Woolies meal.
‘Taking into account the warmth, freshness, tenderness, succulency, seasoning – all of the above and more,’ he said. ‘I’ve got to say that Woolies do a better hot chook.’
But thousands in the comments disagreed.
‘Coles have the best roast chooks in my opinion,’ a woman wrote.
‘The $6 Costco chooks beat both of them,’ a man said.
‘IGA is the best – hands down,’ wrote another.

Meanwhile, a Coles spokesperson revealed that the supermarket giant is ‘extremely proud’ of its range of RSPCA Approved Hot Roast Chickens.
‘We know everyone has different taste buds, but at Coles, we are extremely proud of our range, and we know our customers love them too. They continue to be in our top three most purchased products across the entire supermarket.
‘Our hot roast chooks have amassed a loyal following as a staple meal, and we are always looking for innovative new flavour combinations to take our hot roast chooks to the next level.
‘All Coles hot roast chooks are 100% Aussie RSPCA-approved and roasted in store daily for a convenient grab and go meal option.’
