A teenager is clinging to life in hospital after falling from the boot of a moving car and slamming his head on the road in a ‘prank gone wrong’.

The 18-year-old Coodanup man sustained head injuries of a ‘serious nature’ on Delta Road in Baldivis, in Perth’s South, at 9.50pm on Saturday.

A 17-year-old Learner driver was at the wheel of the silver Toyota Aurion sedan at the time with three men, including the 18-year-old, sitting on top of the car, police said.

When the car took off, all three men fell, with the 18-year-old hitting his head on the road.

The teenager was rushed to Rockingham General Hospital to be treated for his life-threatening injuries.

Witness Ken Bagley decribed the incident to Nine News as a ‘prank gone wrong’.

‘Two of them fell off onto the road pretty quickly, then one fell off and unfortunately banged his head on the road there,’ Mr Bagley said.

‘It’s not a nice sound, the bang of the head on the floor. It makes me cringe just thinking about it now.’

It is not known why the three boys were sitting on top of the car when the 17-year-old Learner began driving off, police said.

CCTV footage shows the 17-year-old and another occupant jumping out of the Toyota further down the street and running back towards the injured man.

Neighbours heard screaming on the street and ran out to help the teenager, putting him in a recovery position, according to Mr Bagley.

In a statement, WA Police said: ‘He (the 18 year old) was expected to be transferred to Royal Perth Hospital due to the serious nature of his injuries.

‘The driver of the vehicle at the time of the incident, a 17-year-old boy from Wellard who holds a Leaner’s Permit, is assisting with the investigation.’
