Peter Helliar ‘proud’ to call Harry Garside a mate after domestic assault charges dropped

Peter Helliar threw his support behind Harry Garside after the fellow I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! star was cleared of all domestic assault charges.

The comedian, 47, stuck by his friend’s side and said he was ‘proud’ to call the Olympic boxer, 25, his mate in a gushing Instagram tribute on Thursday evening.

He commended the bronze-medalist for his ‘dignity’ after being arrested at Sydney Airport on May 2 for domestic violence accusations made by ex Ashley Ruscoe.

‘He co-operated fully and has carried himself with dignity under extremely pressurised circumstances,’ Helliar wrote.

‘The charges have been dropped unequivocally after insurmountable evidence was supplied.’

He continued: ‘These types of accusations can stick so please read Harry’s statement and feel free to share.

‘Harry is one of the most outstanding young people I have ever met. I’m proud to call him my mate.’

Helliar’s support sat alongside Garside’s statement to Instagram which said he felt ‘vindicated’ and ‘thankful’ for the ‘overwhelming evidence in my favour’.

Garside responded to his friend’s supportive post, saying: ‘I appreciate this more then you’ll ever know. Grateful to have connected with you and your family.’

The duo appear to have grown close since staring on this year’s ninth season of I’m A Celebrity where they both lost out to netball star Liz Ellis.

Former girlfriend Ruscoe, 34, allegedly approached police on March 25, the same day Garside left for South Africa, and indicated she had fears for her safety.

A source close to the former couple says Ruscoe was worried about comments Garside may have made about her on the reality TV show following their separation.

However, the domestic violence charge and associated apprehended domestic violence order were formally withdrawn by the police prosecutor during a hearing in Sydney’s Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday.

Daily Mail Australia exclusively revealed the ‘overwhelming evidence’, which cleared Garside of all wrongdoing, were recordings of the incident Ruscoe claimed turned violent.

In the middle of an argument with his former girlfriend, the celebrity boxer pressed record on his phone.

The images and audio captured from those recordings ultimately led police to drop domestic assault charges against Garside and prove his innocence.

According to sources, the recordings reveal Ruscoe as the aggressor – a very different story to the original allegation that Garside assaulted Ruscoe at Bellevue Hill in Sydney’s east on March 1.

In the confronting footage, Ruscoe taunts Garside and threatens on multiple occasions to ruin his career and ‘f**k up your reputation’.

At one stage, according to sources, Ruscoe even claimed she would go ‘straight to the Daily Mail’.

She said it doesn’t matter if Garside was innocent or not – once the story was out, it would go ‘against your career’.

Throughout the recording, it is understood Garside denied doing anything wrong or assaulting his ex-girlfriend.

Ruscoe allegedly responded that police would believe her side of the story and drag him from the house.

In a small sequence of footage obtained by Daily Mail Australia, Ruscoe walks through a doorway carrying a suitcase before she appears to lunge at Garside.

The video then cuts out.

Ruscoe declined to comment.
