Phoebe Bridgers reveals she had an abortion while on tour last year

Phoebe Bridgers has revealed that she had an abortion last fall while on tour following a bombshell report that the US Supreme Court is set to overturn Roe v. Wade next month.

The 27-year-old singer, who was born and raised in California, shared her experience on Instagram Stories on Tuesday in light of the leaked draft opinion indicating a strike down of the 1973 landmark ruling that effectively legalized abortions across America.

‘I had an abortion in October of last year while I was on tour,’ she wrote. ‘I went to Planned Parenthood where they gave me the abortion pill. It was easy. Everyone deserves that kind of access.’

Bridgers included a link to ‘a big list of places you can donate to right now’ to fun abortions in states where access to the procedure has already been restricted.

On Monday evening, the four-time Grammy nominee was at the Met Gala with her boyfriend, actor Paul Mescal. The couple sparked dating rumors in August 2020, and they made their relationship Instagram official in December 2021.

They were at the star-studded benefit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art when Politico leaked the bombshell draft opinion.

Chief Justice John Roberts confirmed the authenticity of the draft, but he added that it does not represent the ‘final decision’ of any members of the court.

In the leaked document, conservative Justice Samuel Alito wrote that Roe v. Wade — the Supreme Court ruling that found excessive state regulation of abortion to be unconstitutional — was ‘egregiously wrong from the start’ and ‘must be overruled.’

Alito, who was nominated to the court in 2006 by George W. Bush, argued that Roe’s ‘reasoning was exceptionally weak, and the decision has had damaging consequences.’

‘Far from bringing about a national settlement of the abortion issue, Roe and Casey have enflamed debate and deepened division,’ he wrote.

Politico reported that, aside from Alito, four other judges voted in favor of overturning the law: Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett, all of whom were nominated by Republican presidents.

If the ruling is overturned by the conservative-dominated court, where Republicans have a 6-3 majority, it would give individual states the power to decide on whether to ban abortion.

The Guttmacher Institute, a pro-choice research group, stated that 26 states are ‘certain or likely’ to ban abortion if Roe v. Wade is overturned.

Abortion rights have been under threat in recent months as Republican-led states move to tighten rules, with some seeking to ban all abortions after six weeks, before many women even know they are pregnant.

In March, Arizona Governor Doug Ducey signed a bill banning abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. Meanwhile, Idaho Governor Brad Little signed a six-week abortion ban that allows family members of the fetus to sue providers who perform abortions past that point, similar to a Texas law enacted last year.

In October, after Texas Governor Greg Abbot signed a bill banning abortions after six weeks, she released a cover of Bo Burnham's 'That Funny Feeling' to raise money for abortion funds

As it stands in the US, abortion can take place until about 24 weeks into pregnancy, but the exact period varies between states.

Bridgers’ post about her abortion isn’t the first time she has spoken out about the importance of abortion rights.

In October, after Texas Governor Greg Abbot signed a bill banning abortions after six weeks, she released a cover of Bo Burnham’s ‘That Funny Feeling’ and sold it on the Bandcamp app to raise money for Texas abortion funds.
