photograph captures moment baby takes first breath

It takes courage to show the world the reality of childbirth for the beautiful, breathtaking and somewhat confronting process it is.

But Perth mother, Jen Roberts, was proud to share the raw and emotional moment she saw her newborn baby boy for the very first time.

Speaking to Daily Mail Australia, Jen, 34, shared the details behind the birth of her newborn – a birth she said wasn’t without its share of complications.

‘It took me seven years after the birth of my son Taj before I considered trying for another,’ Jen said.

‘Taj was delivered prematurely and complications during his birth meant I’d lost almost three litres of blood.

‘I was rushed to theatre for emergency surgery. My uterus wasn’t contracting and doctors were worried it would have to be removed.’

The brave mum said because she kept losing and regaining consciousness during that operation and ‘could feel that I was dying’, she was beset with symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) when her first born was nine months old

It took her a long time to recover and after seven years, she felt the time was finally right to try for another child.

‘It took me that long before I was brave enough,’ she said.

Heartbreakingly, Jen and Dale would lose their second baby through stillbirth. He died due to two rare conditions: Wolf Hirschborn Sydrome and Russel Silver Syndrome at 28 weeks and five days.

The grief and trauma of losing a baby, she said, was unbearable.

‘Having to have a funeral for our child and explaining this to our six-year-old was horrendous,’ she said.

Although struggling with this difficult setback, the pair celebrated with news they were pregnant just before Christmas.

All was going well for the expectant mum, up until 30 weeks, which was when she suffered ruptured membranes causing her waters to leak.

She’d spend the next four weeks on bed rest at the King Edward Memorial hospital in Western Australia – and at 34 weeks her baby son was born.

The photo, she said, captured the palpable emotion of an uncertain situation.

‘I had that fear and anxiety that I might lose him.’

‘And when I saw him for the first time it was the rawest feeling.

‘I could just see a healthy baby in front of me.’

Due to difficulties from Jen’s first birth – it was later discovered she suffered from Von Willebrands disease which means her blood doesn’t clot – she gave birth via a caesarean.

Luckily, a midwife who happened to be in the delivery suite at the time collecting Jen’s birth blood for research, reached for her Iphone to capture the stunning moment.

Her prematurely-born son spent just short of a month in the neo-natal unit, but Jen reports he’s now home and doing well. His brother Taj, she said, is naturally smitten.

And she also revealed there is a special meaning behind their newborn’s name.

‘We’ve named him Lux which means light because we see him as our light at the end of the tunnel.’
